Thought some might want to see these. This is an AB set,of MT FT's,stripped and painted B&M.
These belong to our friend,Dick Gorman(absnut),and the photo is also by him,as the lightning, apparently, ate my camera. He did one of his famous Schnabel cars for me,in excange for this paint job.I think maybe I won here. Thanks Dick.

    Gordon,

That looks fantastic did you happen to take any pictures of the loco at different stages of the painting?

    Hi Paul,and thanks.No,as I said,the lightning(while it was snowing)seems to have disabled my camera.Just as well,I guess,as it was a $500.00 piece of HP junk.Couldn't get this thing,to focus properly,no matter what setting,
    macro,schmackro,it just wasn't any good,and I can't afford to replace it(it was a christmas present).Thanks for your approval buddy.

I can remember when the 4200 class were brand new on the B&M way back in 43 or 44. That was the color scheme before we were taken over by Pat McGinnis who made everything blue. The 4200 class were traded to EMD for the 1700 class Blue Birds.

I wanted my FT's to be painted in the original "as delivered" B&M paint scheme before they were re-done in the "MinuteMan" scheme and, having seen Gordon's fine work, it seemed the right thing to do to ask him to do the job! And a great job he did, too! I think I won, too! :D

    The decal set is Microscale's:

60-885 Boston & Maine FT Locomotives Orignal Scheme, 1943-50.

Argh- I typed an incomplete sentence. Was asking about stripping the shell. Not the striping that was applied... Sorry.

    Dick,
Those are some cars now! [IMG] You have anything depicking the way an techniques you used to make them or instructions of a sort ????? And what type parts? Being I'm in HO, I wouldn't mind setting down an taking the N scale sizes an scaling them to HO and making a few of my own... with a list of parts as well to know what to get for them, just in HO....

I woldn't mind doing one of the big depress center G.E. turbine cars made back in 1996. HUGE things but interesting! :D

    EDIT:
Forgot to ask, what exactly did those cars haul ?????

    760EM,

thanks for your interest. I have to confess I didn't make any scale drawings myself for those cars but, rather, used drawings and plans found on the net. There are very few actual "scale drawings" available. Below, I have indicated a site with a wealth of info available.
The first one I built (20 axle) I sorta "winged it" using a rough diagram found at that site and referring to photos. Encouraged with the ease of construction and having found "blue prints" for another, I built the second one more to scale and prototype (22 axles). This is the type I also built for Gordon. I will also indicate the location of the blue prints.
Construction is entirely from sheet and strip styrene, .022 in. brass wire, and a few commercial parts. Commercial parts were MT trucks and couplers, MT stirrups (from disused bulkhead flats), and 2 brake wheels. Everything is built up from layers of 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm sheet styrene. I can't say if this method would apply to HO but it was ideal for N. Construction time for the "empty" version was about 25 hrs. Add another 6 hrs for the additional "loaded" center section.
Many of these cars were built so that the load became part of the car when loaded and traveling. A look at the pictures on the below listed site will show you how it was done as well as the various types of loads they carried.
I hesitate to post construction photos here as the moderators might not appreciate me filling up bandwidth, but I will be happy to email you a few if you think they may help, along with some simple drawings of my construction methods.

    Unfinished:

    Blueprints:

    http://southern.railfan.net/schnabel/cars/wecxblue/topview.jpg

Downloading the blueprints (they are large) and scaling them down with the computer, and after many trial printings, (measuring with a scale rule), I was able to make a satisfactory set of working plans to go by.
Hope this helps. Contact me if you need more.
