I'm paint 2 F-3's in the Gold & Black scheme. I'm trying to find IF and Where the large gold #'s were located. The Fallen Flags photos of 1948 do NOT appear to have any side #'s and the F-7's have large #'s forward under the cab. A 1968 photo has them to the rear. Did The Frisco ever put the numbers on the sides of the F-3's and if so, were they front or rear?????? Can any Frisco guys help??????
From going through my copy of Lou Marre's "Frisco In Color" and "Frisco Diesel Power", it looks like when first delivered, the F3s did not hve any numbers on the sides of the locomotives, and the word "FRISCO" was smaller. In subsequent repintings, the road numbers appeared in a spot below the cab windows and nose, between the yellow stripes. When some Fs were repainted into the O&W, the road numbers were near the back of the locomotive. But since you're painting diesels in the black, you can either have the road numbers or not, depending on the time frame you're modeling in. They first saw service on Frisco in January 1948, BTW.
I have a paint question for the F-3's. I am wanting to paint a couple into Frisco, Mandarian Orange and White. But What were those numbers and how many were there? I saw that an outfit had released some but I am going to paint mine instead as I have extra F-3's laying around. Just need the numbers and how many they had. Thanks for any information
You can find these answers by doing a Google search of "Frisco Diesel Roster". F3A #5000-5017 1-6/48, #5005 & 5007 rebuilt to F9A.
