I was in Franklin, NY this weekend without a camera. BUT, there were two Amtrak painted over Penn Central painted over something earlier rusting passenger locomotives with catenaries sitting there rusting. Has anyone else seen or know of these ? I will ask friend who lives there to take and send me some pictures, if he can. There were two other diesels from the late 40's early 50's also on another track with a freight string hooked up to it rusting, as well.
Cantenary? GG1s? Big, mean looking dudes with lots of wheels all along the bottom and ready to go in either direction?
Fotheringil, I am going up there in 2 weeks. My father lives in Delhi which is close by. If I get a chance, I too will look for them. Can you give me a clue as to where in Franklin? I agree that you probably saw GG1's. Russ
Mark, if the locos were double-ended 4-D+D-4 with a high cab in the middle, and steeply sloping "fenders" next to a slightly sloping hood, they were probably GG1's...one of Raymond Loewy's best industrial designs. BTW, they were capable of 125 mph, which they consistantly ran between DC, Philly, and Penn Sta. before the Feds got involved and "regulated" their speed....! It was great standing on the rear platform counting off mile posts @ 2(!) per minute...!
Thanks Mark! I usually go to the Catskill mtn RR and the Delaware and Ulster when I go up that way. This will give me something different to seek out! Happy railroading! Russ
As to what I saw- they had these folded up electrical thingies on top. [/QB][/QUOTE] =================== Just an FYI, they are properly called Pantographs CT
Here is the sum total of my information and I am printing the return e-mail verbatim. Mark As far as the trains are concerned, I believe they were at Cooperstown Junction on Rte 7. When I have time, I will go there again to make sure. ( It may have been Colliersville, also on Rte 7 Doug, told me that a group of train modelers a number of years ago set up an historical society and started purchasing these trains. The also run a short train line that does a round trip from Milford to Cooperstown. I estimate that the run is around 10 miles each way. Doug also said that his cousin is President of the historical society and the next time you and Jean visit us, he will ask his cousin to give you a tour. I will try to find out the name of the historical society, I would think they have a wed site I found it. Its the Leatherstocking Railroad Historical Society lrhs.com
Thanks for the info my friend. It is a bit further than I thought at first but I still may try to get there! Happy railroading! Russ
