going to be in fort worth for one day. doesnt seem like much is there according to my friends other than eating and shopping which i can totally pass on (except for eating haha...anyone disagree? let me know interesting places to visit otherwise). but are there any cool places just to sit and watch some trains roar by?
Well, regarding railfanning, Davidson Yard's not too bad but limited places to "perch". Likewise, Tower 55 is the center of railroad life in Fort Worth but limited places to legally watch trains. (and, you probably don't want to push your luck there) One place you can at least see the Tower and most of the action is the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center which hosts Amtrak and Trinity Railway Express commuter trains. They finally have moved the long viewblock of old Railbox cars so it's actually not a horrible place to watch from. North Fort Worth suburb of Saginaw is regarded as the most railfan friendly spot, but it's mostly BNSF with a few UP and one Amtrak twice daily. On the way there are a few other yards including the ex-BN North Yard with a nice center overpass view. Being an SP fan, you might be interested in the Fort Worth & Western yard oriented perpendicular to North Yard on the south side. It is a former Cotton Belt yard, albeit a very small one. As far as other things to do, well you can ride the Grapevine Vintage Railroad (aka the Tarantula) from Grapevine to Fort Worth, (which follows the ex-Cotton Belt trackage of the FWWR) or the TRE from Fort Worth to Dallas, or Amtrak between Fort Worth and Dallas as well. Full light rail system once you get to Dallas as well. If you go up to the Saginaw area, you are minutes away from the north Fort Worth "Stockyards District" (also a station for the Grapevine Vintage Railroad) where there is entertainment and food. (Cattlemen's for a good steak!)
Large BNSF Yard with road along side in Haslet, TX (North West side of FW) Many trains in and out
