Judging by photo's on Ebay, some came with Rapido couplers (probably early run), some with knuckle type, and some with MicroTrains. I never ran this loco since purchasing at a train show from a dealer last year.
Thanks for responding. Kato never installed Micro-trains couplers on their new locomotives. That unit is from the 2010 run and came factory equipped with Kato medium length straight shank couplers. If it were new, it would have a small bag with trip pins and the bubble wrap. It also appears that the unit has had the couplers replaced with Kato short shank offset couplers. That works, but they are higher than normal specification. Saying "never ran," when you have no idea of the 13 year history before you bought it is not accurate. Sorry, but I recently got burned by buying a unit listed as "new" that was missing a piece and had obviously been used. Fortunately, the seller is refunding my money and paying for return shipping.
Some of the other N scale KATO SD45's had similar looking couplers both on Ebay and at train shows. But my area of knowledge HO, not N nor their histories or runs. Regarding this SD45 I examined the wheel treads and they are shiny and appear to have little, if any run-time. I have never run it. I can provide additional photo's if needed. The model appears to be like-new condition. The KATO D&RGW SD45 remains for sale.
I haven't run any of my N scale equipment so far, but I certainly can set up a test track and run anything requested that I put up. It may be a few days since after work I need to drop by the store, then take two cats to the vet. Tomorrow is my anniversary with my wife who immigrated to the US from the UK. So far of all the engines I've sold (mostly HO) I haven't had one complaint yet. But as they say, there is always a first time!
I set up a test track oval using Kato Uni track and my Star Tec Hogger DC throttle. I ran the KATO SD45 around the oval several times each direction. It ran like a KATO should, smooth and quiet, low speed or high. I verified the front headlight (top) and number boards light up in both directions.
OK thanks. if you send me your zip code and email, I can send you the total. jimfitch3@gmail.com Thanks.
