Here is a just-completed project loco I've been documenting on the Diesel Detailers Trainboard Group, BCOL #4644 C44-9WL. It began as an original-run Kato Dash 9 with the 5 step wide porch, a Kaslo CN/BCOL cab, and extensive detailing, including scratchbuilt correct anticlimbers front and rear with the unique asymmetic porch stanchion and handrail configuration, cut-down fuel tank with correct fuel filler pipes, removed inverter cabinet with adjusted side handrails, BCOL horn, and tons of added details which you can find. I milled out the fuel tank for a 13mm round speaker and installed the Digitrax SDN144K1E sound decoder with a cap pack of 300 uF, and the sound is very good (for N scale of course). Both the porch and pilot ditch lights are functional, using 0402 LEDs. Z scale 905 couplers are mounted, and the extra space below them filled in. The cab is open (see-through) with a rudimentary interior and two crew figures. I used proto photos to capture the pattern of weathering but tried not to overdo it, as these engines are still in service with CN, and are really showing their age, about 19 years on the road.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the result, I think the model captures the essence of the prototype fairly well. BTW, this was a LOT of work as you can imagine. I hope you enjoy the photos. As long as these guys are kept in service by CN, BC Rail lives on!

    Wow, Very nice!
I really like weathering like yours that looks as if the engine is being used by the railroad.
I see to many weathered engines and rolling stock that ends up looking like it is setting in scrap yard waiting to be cut up.

Richard, you just keep raising the bar; that is not a loco, that is a work of art.

Hmm, last time I checked it still was...:tb-smile:

I appreciate the kind remarks. I suppose it's because we're trying to get the house into shape for sale (which will take a while) that I don't have a real layout and spend my time on these obsessional loco projects instead. Still, I had wanted to do one of these BCOL Dash 9s for a while and it's nice to see it work out successfully. It seems to be one of my loudest locos and I will have to turn down the master volume--that's an unexpected bonus!

    Great model!

It's hard to believe this is N scale. Congratulations to a truly exceptional piece of art.

    "For BC Rail lovers everywhere..."???

That is truly a fine looking locomotive model and you have reason to be proud!!! Absolutely gorgeous!!!

Too bad, though, that these units never wore the Dogwood TTG scheme... but then, in my world by this time frame the road would still be running independent of the Canuk Borg...
