Good Day... Amazing thing the 'Net... didn't know you existed... thank you for allowing me in... A brief bio... I'm from Knoxville, TN... My first memories of trains was sitting on the bluff at the end of Vermont Ave in Knoxville which overlooked the Southern yards, roundhouse, etc. where my uncles and grandfather worked. Got into the modeling (Lionel) to share with my son... he grew up... I didn't. <G> Have built two layouts, both now gone, but have designs on one final go... Got lots of the old stuff (post war), just need the place to put it. I have a project... I am retired now -- I'm a technical writer -- but trains are still in my blood, as is a desire to make a contribution to the existing knowledge base past and present. Specifically, I am assembling data (some easibly accessable, some painfully difficult to find) -- especially that of the Fallen Flags -- with the final result being a definitive collection of Logos/Heraldry, family trees, etc. right up to the lines we have left. I started this years ago, but set it aside due to workloads, butr now that I am idle (HA!), I'm digging in again. Perhaps with help, this time I will succeed. Again, thanks for letting me in. I look forward to talking trains once again. Roy
Welcome neighbor. Appears as tho' we have one road in common. the Southern. Spent an enjoyable few hours last night running 2 Southern RS-3's, 1 CofG RS-3, and a Southern F-3 over the mainline of the Charleston Area Model RR Club. This of course in HO, but the Club has very strong contingents of O and N gaugers. If you're interested in some local and recent local railroad history on the Forum, Fallen Flags, several of us locals and once-locals put together a thread "ACL And SAL In Charleston" which gives a good, local, and recent (past 60+ years) history of the three local railroads. This is a very good forum without many of the useless clashes that sometimes occur on other railroad and model railroad forums - believe you'll enjoy it - so again, welcome.
Neighbors indeed... Have been to the club a couple of times since they moved... HO is cool but I went with "O" for the sinple reason that my son was a rowdy and Lionel could handle the abuse... surprisingly, he treated the trains with about as much respect as a 10-yr old could. I have a fair amount of Southern pieces, but my pride and joy is a recently acquired K-Line passenger set... Amazing detail. Do give a call and we'll talk in person... 615-403-1011 Roy
Roy, welcome to Trainboard! We have quite a few fallen flag forums here and welcome threads on all of them. Some are more active than others, but all of them have knowledgable fans of those roads. Bet you can tell which one I enjoy. :tb-biggrin:
Roy - Just let me know when it's convenient to call and I will. Right now plan to spend Sunday p.m. at the club (CAMRC). I'm a newbie there but the DCC guys have been real good about letting me run/break in my ACL/SAL/SOU power on their mainline.
I can see that... The NYC is one line I've avoided so far because of the number of smaller systems that went into it's makeup... trying to be systematic in my approach... the TW in me... One positive about the NYC, their herald didn't vary all that much over the years, unlike other roads such as the Sante Fe and The UP... Roy
really, Dave, just about anytime is okay. It's a Cell number and always with me. Perhaps I'll wander over to the club on Sunday Aft and introduce myself... Roy
Thank you... that is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for... you're not aware of a source for original SOU herald -- SR with arrow (a lift of the Richmond and Danville herald) Roy
So did you live in Lonsdale or just hang out there? Or was Vermont Ave. considered to be in Mechanicville?I often wonder what those areas were like years ago. Welcome to Trainboard!I think you will like it here.
