This is the same unit I talked about a while back, while asking about hazard stripes. Just wanted to show how it turned out. This is a pic of the first unit for my Summerland, Pleasantville & Southern Ry. shops. (That name isn't set in stone yet.)

The RR will be modern, but I went with a very basic, old East coast, classic type of scheme... with simple colors and single logos. Some of you older guys might recognize the logos... Yes, they are from the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Ry. I didn't want to go through the whole custom decal hassle, and since that road is gone, I just kind of "borrowed" the logo. What can I say, I'm lazy. :)

The model itself is a Life Like GP20. I turned it into a unit that had been de-turboed at some point. In fact, this model could represent an ex-SP rebuilt GP20. They did theirs in a very similar way.

I removed the turbo stack and added a central filter box from Sunrise. I also added to the roof, two small stacks, a fire cracker antenna, a rotating beacon, a winter hatch, and two window shades... All from Sunrise. I moved the horns to a position on the DB section of the long hood, and kept the old style bell behind the Conductor's side. There's also debris kicker plows on both ends of the loco. I removed all detail on the front of the nose, because I noticed TPW did some of their rebuilt 20s like that. Plus it looks nice. I could have done more details, but I get bored working on one thing for too long.

Decals came from an SP&S loco set, a Vermont Ry. loco set, and an EJ&E loco set, all of which were Micro Scale. I also put white stripes on the steps from a basic white stripe decal set.

Paint included ModelFlex MR "Eagle" Blue, Reefer White, ATSF Silver, and Rust. Then all parts were covered with a semi flat clear. I was going to put a crew in this one, but I decided to do that on the next unit, because I want one to have leading unit flags. I have two more 20s to do, and probably one SW1200. I might do some others as time goes on.

That's a very neat well trimmed paint job you did DaveD! Are you intending to add stripes to this engine, or another one?

Very nice Dave!!!! I have a SF GP20 that I pretty much screwed up (the paint) so I might buy an undec shell and paint it just like yours because I like the looks of it so much!! Thanks for sharing! I will be sharing some of my projects later tonight, inlcuding a custom built UP SD70M w/flared radiator intakes.

    Keep up the great work!

That is a very neat scheme. Very modern and simple, but eye-catching [IMG]

I too am lazy about custom decals, and like the idea of using some existing ones :D

Thanks for the good response guys. I tell ya, I thought it would be easy coming up with a scheme, but it's not. I must have looked through every mag I have 5 times for ideas. I took the best of what I liked and combined them. I always liked MP units, but I also liked the simplicity of say New York & Atlantic, or the old IC green diamond units. I also liked the painted fuel tank look of Cal Northern units.

Thanks Pat, I hadn't noticed that Freelance board before. And yes Watash, I forgot to mention, I scraped the stripes idea. The white decals and white paint just didn't match. I also scraped the idea of using CB&Q style stripes. Alan... I think I went through the MS catalog about 40 times before I found something that would work. But I still think it beats designing my own set and having it printed. I went through that with some other stuff I did, and it turned into a three month ordeal.

Yes, I agree. It took me a long time to come up with the AOW's paint scheme.

Now that I've changed my era and where I'm modeling, I don't need this scheme! :(

    Thanks Alan!
