I don't think I have a single stock locomotive anymore. If it can be a basis, it is a basis for something better! -Robert
WOW!! that SD70 is looking great!!! i hope i get the chance of seeing it in april (the Norwegian z-mod show.)
Robert, You are a freak! A kitbashing, scratchbuilding, laser cutting freak! I wish I had half of your talent AND guts, to be able to tear into a brand new loco and make it better. I'm green with envy. Keep up the great work! Bryan, who will be very happy with the stock SD70 in NS paint. Actually, I'll be very happy with TWO of them.
The wheelbase is exactly the same at 45' 7.5" and the overall length of the SD60M is 71' 2" vs 72' 4" for the SD70M. So yes, the SD70M is too long! A full 1/16" too long, but I should be able to catch the flavor of my target model -Robert
I want some of the horsies too! Any reports from Hans yet on how these pull, and are these actually the production versions or are these the final pre-production samples? Randy
Randy, AZL reports the UP is a great running. It tested will with 10 cars on MTL new track oval (195mm). I am not sure if he tried any more cars. Hans does state the locomotive will run better and look better on 220mm curves and above. Makes sense. Rob
As I understand it, they will have traction tires, so that should improve the pulling effort of the loco. I just hope these will be able to pull at least 30 cars on level track... Being close to the GP35s performance would be great. But I think for most layouts/situations, 30 cars per locomotive is a good expectation. I might have missed this... What's the expected release time of the NS model? And will that be the standard-cab, or -M first? Thanks, Adam
Cut and Pasted from the Ztrack site: "AZL has announced SD70M and SD75Is. The locomotives are injection molded and come with a 8mm Faulhauber motor, dual flywheels, directional headlights, choice between truck and body mount couplers and will be DCC ready. The first releases will be SD70M for NS and UP and SD75I for the CNR. In the secound release, AZL will offer SD70M flared for the UP and SD75I for BNSF and CNR." The NS versions will be here and available by April, same time as the UP, from what I understand. And yes, they will have traction tires, and I'm betting that they will give the GP35 some decent pulling competition. I'm just hoping that they are speed matched as well as the Geeps! Bryan
Interesting... That means it would be tempting to do an SD50... Can anyone guess what railroad that would be in??? Then again, I think I may limit my time frame a little to the late 1970s... If I can hammer that down, and stick with it, then that should save me some money over the long-term. Adam
This is a useful loco for bashing, if you are not afraid to mess with the cab/windows and the shell. As we have seen with the GP35, people here are not afraid to do anything, so I would suspect we can see all kinds of locos made from this model. -Robert
