This is my AWRR Alco RS1, used as a guinea pig to test some decal paper. It looks ok, but I am not happy with the performance of the paper, and will try another brand. But I am quite pleased with the overall look of the locomotive. Now I must get those details added
Very nice!!!!! You've inspired this N scale returnee to go out & paint that RSD4 in O&NE colors. Can't wait to see more!
Alan-sure like the paint scheme you have devised. It catches the eye but is not too flashy. What other units do you plan to put in these colors?
Hi Alan, I think you have done really well and the results look pretty good to me. I too have tried the paper from the Decal Paper Store but found it too thick and inflexible for the small decals I had in mind. I also had difficulty getting the decals to adhere to my models and when I asked advice from the Decal Paper Store they suggested sticking them on with PVA glue !!! I was, however, really pleased with the printing and there was no sign of the ink running when immersed in water. I dont know what you think but I would suggest that this paper is probably more suited to larger subjects and perfectly flat surfaces. More recently I have experimented with some imported paper from the U.S. that comes with a spray on fixer (I think it's called Jetcal and I obtained it mail-order from a shop in Suffolk)The sheets are available in either clear or white. The finished decals are thinner and more flexible but I found that the ink ran if you tried to cut the decals too close to the actual image. I intend to have another go at using this paper when I get the chance. Take care, John.

John (Whitby), I agree with you on the decal paper, it is very thick for our uses. (See the topic in the Inspection Pit). Can you tell me where you got the Jetcal please? I definitely want to try other papers. I have artwork done, but now want some white and clear paper to try them out on. I have used some sent to me by a customer in the USA, and they were excellent! The paper he used was Vitacal, also available in white or clear. I think it is available from Walthers.
Alan, I made a mistake when I called the paper JetCal.....It is actually called SuperCal. Perkins Distribution Ltd. 90-96 Greenwich High Road London SE10 8JG" I obtained my paper/fixing spray from Galaxy models and hobbies. They are in Felixstowe Suffolk and appear to specialise in R/C aircraft. They do not actually list the paper on their website but you can obtain it from them by either e-mail or telephone order. The service was very quick. Hope this helps, John [ 13 September 2001: Message edited by: John Whitby ]</p>
Alan, That is one real nice paint scheme. You'll have to model a wash rack to keep the white nice and bright!

I have an RSD4 waiting a trip to the paint shop, and I'm looking for more Alcos. The Kato RSC2 is a sweet-looking engine- my local hobby shop has one in UP colors runing on the display layout. Now all we need are decent N scale Centuries..
Looking great Alan! I like your scheme! Speaking of decalling, I have 58 (!!) Atlas 33,000K tank cars to paint black and decal for Tank Train (I'm modeling SP's oil cans in N).

I just placed an on-line order for some Super-Cal decal paper and fixing spray from Galaxy Models (thanks for the info. John). I will post results here when tested. I ordered the white paper, and if it is successful I will try the clear paper.
