Some railroads still use firemen, only now they are called "Assistant Engineers". I remember hearing about this because people began to get the idea that on diesels, all that the fireman did was go along for the ride. But in fact, the firemen were usually sent to fix or walk the train occasionally while the conductor and engineer sat in the engine.
