Here is another project that I started and finally finished. It was hard to get the faded Penn Central lettering to appear the way I wanted it. I added BLMA grabs, Gold Medal lift rings and a Digitrax decoder to it.
Did you paint the whole engine in Penn Central first? </font>[/QUOTE]I first painted the cab sides with ModelFlex engine black. Then I masked off where the numbers would go and painted the rest of the cab and shell with a mixture of PollyScale rail brown and engine black. I followed that with Floquil flat finish and then applied the PC decals. After that was done, I again used the Floquil to seal the decals. I went back and weathered the shell using the brown/black mixture again. Using a small brush and Testors brush cleaner, I dabbed at the decals to show just enough of the white that I was after. When that was dry, I used my finger to rub the areas to smooth them a little. Again, a little weathering was added. After all that, I cut 2 small pieces of black decal film for the CR's and applied them, clear coated and lightly weathered. This sounds like a lot of paint, but if applied in thin coats, it works well.
Sorry Darren, I'm stealing your response! [ December 21, 2005, 03:09 AM: Message edited by: Don Rickle ]
Chuck, An excellent model, maybe next time you can take some step by step photographs of the process?
Nice unit! The fading is perfect, looks like something almost SP/SSW-style fading, minus the grunge, grime, and rust... Doh!
Chuck, Nice work! A couple of days ago, a local railfan posted a picture of a NS GP38-2 that was still in Conrail paint, but very clearly the "Penn Central" letering was showing thru on the hood like your model! Harold
Thanks ya'll! I have more projects on the way - but don't we all! But they may have to wait a few more weeks. We sold our house and we are in the middle of packing and moving, but I will have to take the occasional modeling break!
