Well finally uploaded a couple photos of the under contruction Moose River RR. Im open to any comments, advise etc... And finally the track plan (Thanks to 10-87 ) It has since been slightly modified. There will be a diveder between the staging yard and the front of the layout. I may also put a diveder between both sections.
Congrats! Very nice looking benchwork I must add. As soon as spring appears I'll begin building my Ntrak module, so I can finally get some trains running (just back and forth!). What kind of subroadbed and roadbed are you going to be using? Mike A
First suggestion, finish the room first! As much as you want to run trains, this is key. Looks like you've got classic L-girder there, that will give you a real good base. Foam will also be nice to work with, light and easy to play with, but not very forgiving to mistakes. I've cut some nice rock strata out of foam with both knives and hot wires. You'll have fun with it. As for the track plan, looks good. Lots of mainline running and a few spurs. Should provide good operation for a one or two people. Good call on the divider to hide the yard. Also looks like you've provided room for future expansion, which is another good call. I also like to use XTrkCad, simple and it works. Keep us up-to-date, looks good so far!!!
As far as finishing the garage, don't see that happening as we are planning on putting the house on the market soon. Layout size is 5X16 and made up of two 5X8 sections. I was looking for mobility hence the foam base instead of plywood. The inner loop is to be elevated and the spurs have totally been redone with a small passing siding included. I'm planning on 3-4 people at the most and ease of operation should I want to run trains by myself. Expansion was planned for and will commence once I relocate to a permanent location. BTW, this is a Unitrack layout
Nice looking track plan! It should be a blast to run when finished.. Any Tunnels?? or is it on the plains? That benchwork looks a little overkill? Looks like you could drive a sherman tank onto it without bending.. You running Nscale or Proto !!
That's some nice benchwork, moose. I reckon it's going to be quite stable in the end - very important to maintaining rolling stock on the track! Gary.
You and Andy are doing fine. The cross members will allow you the choice of attaching grade posts if you choose now or later on, or to safely attach foam for when you do move to another location. Do be sure you tie the layout down tight to the trailer, or pickup bed to prevent the layout from bouncing up and down against the bed floor. The truck springs will take road shock if the foam is bonded securely. This should be a fun project for both of you.
Moose, The benchwork looks great I am just about to start my benchwork and will probably use a similar design. I look forward to seeing more pictures as your layout progresses
That benchwork should be solid as it appears to have more wood in it than the average house has.... My Civil Engineering Profs. would be saying, "It will be strong but will it be affordable!" Damn that is sure a bunch or wood for little N Scale trains. Art
As I have mentioned before, Americans build baseboards strong enough to put real trains on Looking good, Moose. Keep up the good work, and get some trains running as soon as possible!
Hi Ed. Trackwork is about 90% complete. I've been working on the diveder most recently. It will seperate the yard and cut the layour in half. A "T" if you will. This way I'll have two 3x8 scenes and one 2x16 scene. One country, one mountain and one idustry/yard.
That's the great thing about Unitrack. You can try out different layouts, and even run trains on it, and then change it and start all over again!
