Thought I would share my GHQ/Kato Mike with you all. The model includes a Kato Mike, a GHQ W3 Pewter Conversion Kit, Labelle Engineer and Fireman, and to finish the meal, a Lenz LE030 BEMF Decoder: The Prototype:
Robert, That's real quite impressive. Nice work. GHQ did a nice job on the conversion Kit. Did you consider putting a SoundTrax decoder in it?
I thought about sound some time ago and decided I would use an under table multi speaker sound system. The Surroundtraxx system uses the transponding feature of some decoders to track the loco through blocks, and the volume is adjusted between speakers/blocks to follow to loco. I have heard decent sounding systems in HO but in N with a tiny speaker I'm not so convinced, and overall it is cheaper to go with the Surroundtraxx system than convert a lot of locos. What do you think about Surroundtraxx? Surroundtraxx Info:
I guess it's ok, if you like those old steam engines. Seriously...it look simply fantastic. Good job. Thanks for sharing. Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. (a fictional shortline in Central Illinois) http://www.pegnsean.net/~revnjeff
No mistaking those lines. That's an NP loco! Very nice!!! Boxcab E50 [ 12. February 2003, 01:51: Message edited by: BoxcabE50 ]
Robert, The model looks excellent, great work. I do not have DCC but am after a sound system for the layout. Do you have an recommendations?
Thanks for the nice comments guys. Paul, I ran across Maxx Traxx in a magazine and thought it might be good for a non DCC layout. It uses track voltage to adjust the sound. They also offer these SoundBloxx modules that you can hide around the layout for othr ambient sounds and all together I think their system is a good way to go for non DCC layouts.
Nice! I need to get on the ball and get some of my N scale steam projects finished. I've got an Atlas 0-8-0 to become a C&O C-16 switcher, but that project may get laid by the wayside permanently due to the horrendous wheels not working with C55 track, and I've got a Spectrum Consol to become a C&O G7/9, and a Kato Mike to become a C&O mike.
Robert, Thanks for the link it is just what I'm looking for. I have emailed for additional information and prices. I'll let you know how i go
Very nice work. I have the Pennsy L1 conversion kit but have not started on it. One question for you is did the finished model have more pulling power due to the extra weight of the GHQ boiler?
Well at first Inkaneer, the loco would slip pulling 8 cars up a 4% but I put the traction tire driver on it and that solved the problem. I think overall the weight helps more with the electrical pickup than pulling power/ Electrical pickup is excellent at all speeds and all my trackwork.
