Honestly, I'm surprised this hasn't been bashed more. It's really not a tough one too do. Cutting the fans out of is the roughest, as they're solid.

Another option for the vents is filling them with putty. I'm trying to do my Cabbage with the least amount of paint work as possible (it's a personal challenge), so I'm aiming for just having to paint the black, and re-decal the stripes and the numbers.

I'll try and get some "in progress" shots this weekend for an example on how easy this really is.

Over here, what used to be British Rail had - and the East Coast operator still uses what they call DVTs - Driving Van Trailer. They are purpose-built, not conversions, and are usually at the London end of the train, with locomotive at the other end. In effect the train is in push/pull mode.

That makes sense, thanks. And what did you use for the baggage door? I think my Cabbage project is back in motion :teeth:

    Matt,

I used ribbed styrene... it worked great. Please post progress pictures of your project!

No worries, gave me a good laugh. Here is what I was hoping would finish itself while I ignored it... F40 and Cabbage.jpg I also have a parts model I got for $20. These are both LLs, I don't want to mess up on a Kato. My problem so far has been obsessive painting, I'll file something down and repaint it. So far the fans are gone but need to be filed in, the top vents are close to missing, and I haven't started the baggage door yet.

It appears that the Cabbage I intended to model has moved to California in a beautiful paint scheme! [IMG]Maybe...or I can do the old Phase V edition.

I was wondering where 'cabbage' came from, but see it explained earlier in the thread! British ones do not have the name, as they are purpose built cab control cars, as was also mentioned. Watching a class 91 electric pushing a full train at 125mph being driven from the DVT always looked kind hairy to begin with, but they have been doing so safely for a long while now!
Whilst we have lots of locomotive hauled trains here in Slovenia, push-pull is not used, but is widespread 'next door' in Austria.
If I modelled US roads I think I would build a cabbage :)

    I'm using Evergreen siding.

Sorry for my delay in getting pics up. We sold our house, and are in the process of packing, while looking for a new home.

I'm really hoping to get back into my project after the move and have it ready for Trainfest. I get a lot of feedback on my Hiawatha at that show with power at both ends.

Peter, I had to repaint a few times... its frustrating to have to strip the whole thing, but it was worth it in the long run! How do you plan on filling in the fans? I used styrene, Zap-a-Gap and putty. It worked pretty well for me. I will enjoy watching your progress!

I've filled them in with a knock-off Zap-a-Gap. When I make a little more progress I'll post a picture, hard to find the time or the concentration :teeth:

I hear ya! I did mine a half an hour a day... That helped me concentrate and not stress out too much. I find this helps me produce a better product and ensures I spend time on more important things like family, exercise and so on.

Oh what the heck, meant to touch up the paint but I might as well post a picture. F40 cabbage progress1.PNG Look around the..."abused" paint, and I think it's coming along. (The Phase III is even showing...)

hate to bring up an old thread, but the heartland flyer has gone back to using a Cabbage full time. Its wearing the Phase V colors. I am wanting to make one. Which model did you guys start out with? Im thinking of picking up a life like just for the cheap price and make one out of that. Whats the best paint colors to use?

I have built three and used Katos each time. Life-Likes aren't a bad option either, but the Katos work better (and I leave the motors in them). I'll have to check on paint colors when I get home. I found one I really liked and used it on the P42s before Kato corrected the super teal blue color they used to use.

Mine (which this new post reminds me I should work on) is a LifeLike, you don't waste much money if you mess up lol.

Interrsting you mentioned the teal color. I thought mine looks a little teal. How do you tell which ones are the early models?

I saw my first one the other day. What was interesting, was that he had both doors wide open as the train came in, so I assume it was like that the whole trip. My friend, who didn't know they exist, freaked out a bit, because he couldn't understand how it was pulling a train without an engine. lol But that would be a cool way to model it, if you could have the doors open and see through it... Since technically, it's apparently prototypical.

In the real world, Amtrak had two (actually three, but mainly two) variants of the Phase V paint scheme on the P42s. The first (Phase Va) featured more grey at the bottom with a red and blue pin stripe. There was also a smaller Amtrak logo in front of the cab doors on each side below the windows. The second version (Phase Vb) had less grey on the bottom and just a red stripe. The smaller logo was also removed. You can see these in the photos below.

When Kato first started doing their locomotives in Phase V, they did version Va, but the color was way off and more teal than it should have been. When they started doing Vb, they corrected the color. Its a little hard to tell the color differences in the photos, but in real life its super obvious.

I briefly mentioned there were three versions above. I'm really going to nerd out here. Going from the front of the locomotive to the back, the blue wave use to extend a bit above the roof after it came off the nose and behind the vent located directly behind the cab door and then came back down on the side of the last 1/3 of the car body before "whooshing" up to the roof on the end (hopefully that all made sense). This is how it was for Va and the beginning of Vb. After a little while, the blue wave went to the edge of the roof line instead of just above and that's where it is to this day. Kato's Va has the first wave version. I've included images of this below, 186 is shown in the first version and 207 is sporting the latest.

That's probably more than you wanted to know, but I hope this helps!
