After the p42's arrived, how much did they run consisted to the older f40ph. Did Amtrak usually keep the same locos consisted together or did they do some mixing? So far, I have only found one pic with a f40 used as a pusher.

The F40 probably wasn't a pusher, but a rebuilt "cabbage car."

Basically, Amtrak gutted a number of F40s and turned them into unpowered cabs for use in push/pull service on trains like the Cascades. The engine room on these cars is converted into space for baggage.

Whatever engine is on the property, they are used in any consist. Yes, they ran together back in the day. Now, the F40's are being converted to cab cars. Much safer for the engineer to be in a converted F-40 than a cab car when in push-pull service.

This site is great. New & old photos of trains. You'll see
    F-40's/P-32's/P-40 & 42's.
    Most back then were PH.2 F-40' with PH.3 P-40's.

I've seen many pictures from the late 90s of F40PHs with P40/42s. Lots of mixing with the B32-8s as well.
