I'm looking for info on NP F3 paint schemes. Please point me in the correct direction to help a company that is trying to get it right. Also did NP F3s have dual headlights or single?
There was a discussion here earlier complete with pictures. It will take some time to find it. Just off the cuff I thought the passenger engines had dual healights. And I think that Kato's units sparked the conversation as they were incorrect. Let me see what I can find. Edited add on: I've added an attachment. The picture is not mine and I'm using it strictly for purposes of illustration. The picture is from a NP website. Down side: The unit looks like a F7 or newer unit. So this may not be much help. Still searching. I must apologize. I thought I was on to something that would help here. The search engine, as is the case with many websites, leaves much to be desired. I will continue to search but later in the day.
George- Check in with the NP Modelers Yahoo Group! They've discussed this sort of thing extensively. Threads in archives. And, most of, if not all members of the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association Modeling Committee, are members there. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NPModelers/ Boxcab E50
The biggest mistake that could be made would be to include the chicken wire mesh between the porthole windows. This is a feature the NP F-3's did not have and is awfully difficult to hide or change.
George (Wig-wag), are you interested in the early (Pine Tree) or late (Loewy) paintjob? Model Railroader had a story in the November 1993 issue about NPs F-unit colors. It covered both paint-schemes. There is a good descritption about the colors (and the changes) in the book "Northern Pacific Diesel Era". All NP F-units that came after the FT had dual headlights. The passenger F3 were purchased in ABB configuration, but soon changed to ABA with the purchase of additional F5 A-units. So since 1949 the F3 would run together with F5 (which has the side panels of a F7 and the roof of an F3) in ABA configuration, either F3-F3-F5 or F5-F3-F5. I can look up the individual road numbers for each combination if required. Hope that helps Dirk
Aside from the schemes, there is much discussion of the proper colors themselves. More detailed paint mixture data posted just today, on the NP Modelers Yahoo Group. Boxcab E50
