I have a mechanical drawing of an engine. One of the measurements states that it is 70'-8" (21.54m) over the "pulling faces."

    What are "pulling faces?"

    What are "coupler faces?"

Another measurement references the "striker faces." I think I know what that is. Probably the same as the "striker plates;" it's just the outside edge.

BTW, these are from different drawings on different pieces of equipment. Thanks for the help.

If I were to venture a guess, I would say the pulling face would be the inside surface of the knuckle and the coupler face would be the outside surface of the knuckle.

    Flash-

I have enough trouble with a 12" ruler. Now, I see vocabulary is important, as well.

Thanks, guys. It is certainly more of an academic question than a practical one, for me. "Frame length" is important for modeling, but these other terms are not an issue for planning the model. [IMG]

For real railroads, it probably is related to train length. If you add together the length over the pulling faces (inside of the knuckle) for all rolling stock and engines, you would have the length of the train, I believe.

Flash is correct, Pulling face is measured from inside closed knuckles,

Striker face is the palm or solid body of a coupler that takes the load from pushing, and the coupler face is the outer surface of a closed knuckle.
