Anything like the cottages in Newport RI?

 

This is the Vanderbilt "cottage" in Newport, known as The Breakers. I actually attended a wedding of one of my best friends there.


They have docents/actors who take you on tours, and they play "in period". On my tour, the guide asked everyone where we were from, and when I said "California", he looked at me and asked if taking a stage and rail car that far was "rather unpleasant". I replied "No, Leland lent me his personal car for the trip, though it was tedious". Unfortunately, the guy had no idea who Leland was. [Stanford -- I guess I could have said Collis, Mark or Charles, but doubt he would have known Huntington, Hopkins or Crocker, either]

 

We have a cottage too but I won't bother posting a picture of it.

 

If that's a "cottage", I wonder what they define as being a mansion?

 

This was the Vanderbilt Mansion (Biltmore Estate, Ashville NC).


And, of course they had their New York City mansion, as well, on 5th Ave

 

So so to see how impoverished they were. The NC view looks more like a royal palace in the UK.

 

Any of those would make nice depots.
