Here is what wikipedia has for EMD's SD40X > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD40X .... Please Note their (wikipedia's) Date built for EMD's SD40X! Both of my -The Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide books YEAR 2000 and YEAR 2008- LIST A Build Date of September 1979 for EMD'S SD40X .

Take Wikipedia with less than a grain of salt.

 

In fairness, they do give build dates of mid 1960s and later in the article 1979 for the truncated SD50s that went to the KCS and were also - confusingly - SD40X models.
