Is there any way to distinguish the 5000-hp E44as from the other E44s?

Did any E44s last to be retired in Brunswick Green, as some GG1s did?

The only rectifier electrics on PRR were the E44s and the experimental E3B and E2C, correct?

I know this is an old thread, but i'll bump it. is by their road numbers. the last 5 E44s (4460-4465) were built straight at the factory as E44As.

eventually, 22 of the regular E44s where converted to E44As (4438-4459). PRR started with 4459 and workded down until 1969, when the Penn Central couldn't handle the costs anymore.

The E44s were never painted in Brunswick green, they were all black, even in PRR days. Many survived into Conrail with their black paint schemes, but with the keystones long gone. Penn Central repainted all units that i'm aware of.

In addition to the locomotives you mentioned, there was also E2B, which looked pretty similar to a cross between and F-unit and an FA, with pantographs.

I forgot I'd ever made this thread...

I learned about the E2B - well, probably shortly after posting this.

I've often seen the E44 identified as wearing green. The preserved unit at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania certainly looks black. The problem with trying to tell in old photos is that they were usually quite dirty. Still, I've seen photos somewhere that were definitely green.
