It's wonderful that one of these survives. But the location and how it's displayed leaves a lot to be desired. I do wish it could be brought back to home territory. Boxcab E50
Deer Lodge has no cover as well. Judging by the condition, it is being taken care of, like E70. The Road donated it to St. Louis, maybe no one in Washington wanted it at the time, better here than scrapped.
Thank you for getting these photos. I know what you mean about having a hard time getting a good angle, but we can see overall views in many books. What you've done, by getting a bunch of detail shots, is really show some things most of us cannot readily see anymore. Thanks for photographing the sign about what "bi-polar" means in this context. I didn't actually know where that term came from, and I am probably not the only MILW fan that didn't.
Deer Lodge has a regular bunch of volunteers who watch over the displays. They even have some simulated catenary strung over the Joe now. The Bipolar had sat for many years, getting rather shabby. Long time w/o serious maintenance, before they painted it in recent years. And it's already fading in the weather since then. Boxcab E50
Your welcome SD, my only disappointment with the place is there was no geared steam anywhere to be found. Maybe someday they will find a Lima and a Willamette Shay, Heisler and a Climax to add. If you ever happen to be in St. Louis, stop by, and bring plenty of camera batteries. :tb-embarrassed:
If I had any money, I'd go after it and bring it home to the Pacific NW. If.... I'd bet they would part with it, for the "right" amount of $$$. Boxcab E50
