By the way, here is a photo of #482 that was hocked up to do the Photographers Special that I hope to do one of these days.
Yeah, that would be great to add more to your awsome collection. Maybe all us "Narrow Minded" Trainboard railfans can get together and form a photo line.
Hey, I just noticed that in Russell's photograph from June 1971 that it shows the back end of 481. Here is a photograph of it later from this same trip my other Durango & Silverton shots from 1992.
Just a flat car and some box cars. They may have been using them for work cars. This is looking the other way from the previous photo, only I must have climbed on top of the cars. Yup, I must have.
Some more fine photos there Russell. Speaking for Freight Cars, here is a shot that shows most of the "Photographer's Special"
D&S must have painted those cars cuz they have a lot more paint on them than the ones I used to see. This was in June of 1971. I was riding in an open gondola and it was still a bit nippy, especially when the sun ducked behind the clouds.
Those rails sure look close together. Here a K-28 is about to couple onto the train. A freind and I were riding up to Needleton to do some back packing in 1976. We flagged the train five days later at Elk Park to return to Durango.
I can't find where D&RG ever owned any narrow gauge hopper cars. From what I have gathered they did have a bunch of drop-bottom gondolas that they used for similar service. The Cubres & Toltec bought two ex Butte Anaconda & Pacific 50 ton hoppers that they converted to narrow gauge in 1990.
Drop bottom gondolas was what I've heard as well. If I recall correctly, when the EBT shut down in 1956, some of their hoppers found new homes. Am thinking that perhaps this could have been one. Now my curiousity level has gone up even further! Boxcab E50
Glad to know that my memory of something read years ago, the EBT hoppers, was correct. What is the name on the side of car 319? Can't quite make it out. Boxcab E50
