Friday 10/6/06, mudslides and flooding closed the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and engine 482 was damaged. Saturday, Sunday and Monday, trains were run to Cascade only. The line is now reopened, although rain and snow are still in the forecast. For details, visit Colorado Railroads.

I meant to post similar: you beat me to it ;) I was driving through the area at the time the storm hit...I have NEVER seen it rain (and hail) like it did starting on Friday. I understand that one train started out of Silverton and had to back back into town because of water covering the tracks.

I watched the Denver game last night. A fair amount of rain there. But this is a different corner of the State. Hope there's no serious setbacks!

Let me guess after a brief investigation they found the Laundriest Movement in Durango planted a slide bomb in hopes of sabotaging the D&S Railroad. Seriously, I hope #482 and the ROW can be repaired. I've had the privelege to ride behind #482. I can say with all clarity, without a doubt, one of my best days! I hope to do it again...soon!

    Needleton Siding MP484.00 / Ruby Creek MP484.60 / No Name Creek MP485.40

Beyond that is: Mud Slide MP486.60, Garfield Slide MP487.80, & Red Young SLide MP488.50 before reaching the Animas River Bridges at MP 489.90 so you can see this area is know to have issues.

To put the river into perspective for those that don't know the line here is a photograph taken last year at the Animas River Bridges; not much room for error during a flash flood or high water like we had the past few days.
