Looking for a paint match for DT&I "orange" I'm having to replace the nose on a couple of early n scale DT&I GP38's so as to have the low headlight...Any suggestions....????
At least when I have done this, for my MILW orange engines, I have found it took some fiddling and fussing. Nothing was quite right, (most of the time), right out of the bottle. This was using Floquil, with it's various engine and reefer oranges.
You're right about DT&I orange! I saw some of these in southern Ohio--so odd seeing street running in Ironton, for example--and no two engines seemed to have the same color or shade. I've never tried to mix, match, or perform alchemy on colors but to me a starting point might be CSX "maintenance orange" or even BNSF's "Omaha Orange (I think)" but add a little red, maybe, to make it more "orange-y", Good luck to you!
I use a couple of different types of paint for my DT&I and Ann Arbor orange engines/cars. I still have some bottles of Floquil Daylight Red which is a good match and I have mixed up Scalecoat II ATSF Red and Reefer Yellow for my models. Rick Jesionowski
I was not home when I first answered this post, so a little more information: Here is a car painted with Floquil SP Daylight Red: Here is a car painted with the 50/50 mixture of Scalecoat II ATSF Red and Reefer Yellow: Another comment, many DTI modelers consider the Athearn factory painted units as too orange and prefer the Atlas factory painted units. Here is a page from the DTI Modelers website that will help with other paint sources like acrylic which I don't use. http://dti.railfan.net/Paint_Colors/DTI_Orange.html Rick Jesionowski
