The INDIANA RAILWAY is no more. It came down Sunday thru Wednesday before Thanksgiving.(Place small sigh here)
This layout is to be replaced by a new layout designed more towards OPERATION. The new INDIANA RAILWAY will be an around the wall, walk in, double decked layout.
My question is: What are the best heights for each deck? Has anybody else built such a layout and what heights for each section of benchwork are the best for operation, viewing, and general working on the layout?
    Ideas on height people?

It was broke, so now we gonna fix it!!

I have a double decker at 37 and 57 inches... I had to have it at that height. If I could have, I would have had it at 39 and 59.

    I am 5 foot 10 inches.

I came this close-->| |<-- to building an N scale Double decker layout 13x23, but I decided not to once I realized, I'd have to do fancy stuff for the lighting, and covering up the windows wouldn't help house-cleaning much.

The depth of each deck has a lot to do with how far apart they need to be. If one or both decks are very shallow, you can get away with very close seperation (Bill Darbaby's Maumee Route is a good example.)

I like a deep lower deck with a shallow upper deck. This keeps the upper deck from blocking the view of the lower deck.

Remember that a deep lower deck will make reaching the upper deck more difficult.
