Gotta love a GE with a bad turbo. :teeth:

I had one trailing one day that was real bad. Heading up Tehachapi, going through tunnel 5 the smoke was beating us out of the tunnel. As we made our way out of the tunnel, a huge plume of black smoke was pouring out of the bore. This was followed by an enormous fireball. I'm still surprised we didn't catch the whole mountain on fire.

Do you get any sort of a visual or audible warning before a unit
"explodes" like that? Or do you hear it and hope that specific unit
hasn't thrown something else through the exhaust stack? :D :D

That unit made it to Barstow.

GE units will belch flame/smoke for weeks before the turbo finally "has enough". In normal operation, the turbo will not kick in till run 5, so they naturally smoke pretty heavy when you increase the throttle above run 4. This is due to the oil and unburnt fuel that collects when the turbo is not "engaged."

When a turbo does go out, about the only thing you'll hear from the cab is the alarm bell. But I'm sure it'll make a pretty good bang if you are standing near it. Not to mention the oil and fan blades laying all over the place.:embarassed:

    Here is one for you.

Its actually the SD70MAC trailing that is belching the smoke.
