Here's a shot of a small (1x2 ft.) N-scale diorama. Loco is a Life-Like GP20. [ 20 February 2002, 17:57: Message edited by: Gerry M ]
Gerry, That looks really nice. Is that made from the diarama that Woodland Scenics puts out? What did you use to weather your rock castings?
Yes indeed, it is one of the Woodlands kits. Never having got into N-scale before, I wanted to work through their entire scenic methods before I tackled my first layout...
Gerry, dioramas are an excellent way of practicing scenic skills, and you have done a great job with that one!
Thank you for your kind words Alan. To answer the previous question about the rocks, the castings have 2-3 acrylic washes on them. Separate diluted (50%) black, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna washes. I washed them after they were glued in place, but another idea would be to put the washes on after they are cast so that the wash gets into all the nooks and crannies. You could do the initial washes this way at least and then final washes with the rocks in place to simulate the rainfall weathering and to get the final colouring to match with the rest of the scenery ground cover. Very nice work, Gerry. I echo Alan's remarks. Woodlands Scenic's kits appear to be the way to go for someone wanting to try their hand at scenery. I think what you have done shows those who think it's difficult that it can be fairly straight-forward using the kit. Gary.
From one newbie to another- awesome!!!!! I'm just starting the scenery on my layout, and the pic of yours is a great source of inspiration. Like it was suggested, build a few more of these & you'ev got a layout. Happy rails!
