I've got a question about the Digitrax Genesis system and the upgradability. From what I understand, using Genesis, I would assign 2 digit loco addresses. Now if I decide to move up to the Empire Builder or Chief, I am allowed to assign 4 digit loco addresses. Do I have to re-assign address #s? Is it difficult to re-assign address #s?

I am just curious if anyone else has gone through this upgrade process and what their take on their experience was.

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Re-addressing locomotives is rather simple. Again, I'm not familiar with Digitrax, but all I have to do is put the loco on the programming track and program it!! I'm sure Digitrax is the same. Just give it the new address and make sure it is set to use the "long" address, which is this 4-digit address.

I upgraded from a Big Boy to a Chief. To code a 4 digit address, first set CV29 to 26. Then set CV18 to the 4 digit address.

If your not familiar with the term CV, it takes less than a minute to reprogram to 4 digit addresses. BUT, you are not required to change to 4 digit. The Chief & Empire Builder work just as well with 2 digit, 4 digit, and even alias 4 digit numbers. The alias 4 digit allows you to address a decoder that only supports 2 digit addresses just like it had 4 digits.
