For ease, or convenience of use, what size would you choose for a maximum, in your memory card? 1GB? 512MB? Smaller? Larger?

I purchased a Nikon D70s a month ago. I bought two 1 gig cards. On normal settings, it will take 583 pictures. On large and fine settings both, it will take 284 pictures.
By the way, the battery lasted through the 500+ pictures without recharge.

The largr the card the more pictures you need to cycle through to get to the one you want. The download time from Camera to PC is not long. I have two 1 Gig cards and a 512. I tend to use the 512 more than the 1 gig at normal. The 512 holds about 250 Jpeg pictures at normal.

What you need to ask yourself is how many pictures you will take in one setting, what resolution etc. Most proffesionals buy several 512 cards, and it is about $20.00 less expensive to buy 2 - 512 than 1 - 1 gig.

    Good Luck

I have a one gig card with the D-50, plus one 512. The one gig card will hold 556 normal sized photo's. The battery in the D-50 lasted for 550 + photo's.

Am trying to decide what would be the best size to have, for something like a long weekend/short week outing of railfanning.

I have the 16MB that came with the camera, and a 64MB as well. But that just can't be enough if a person gets into some serious photographing.

Estimate how many pictures you think you would take before you would download to a PC.

If you did not have a digital, How many rolls of regular film would you normally go through, that is a good guide.

As I said above 512 meg will do about 200 Pics, my preference is 512 meg card. I carry a couple which gives me a toatl of around 400 to 500 pictures.

The back of the cards package or your camera manual will usually give you an estimate of the number of pictures it will store on a given memory card.

For my simple 1MP Camera I have four cards; 4MB, 16MB, 32MB, and 128MB. My wife has a 512MB and 1GB card for her 8MP Camera she normal runs at 4MB (Medium) setting.

Something to think about, if you use a large card that lets you store hundreds of picutes and you losse that card, becomes damaged, and/or get's stolen you have lost a ton of memories you can't get back. To small and you are alwyas changing cards or run out of space at the wrong time. Find a happy medium for your camera and have multiple cards of that size that you can keep seperate from the camera in a safe hard case.

My 128MB card in my 1MP Camera would let me have over 400 Images and trust me I was really scared of loosing those shots before I got back to my PC to get them downloaded and backed up to a CD/DVD. My 4MB card came with the camera and is way to small to do much but still good for a pinch when I need a free chip for a dozen or so shots.

The camera I have is a 4MP. Trying to plan on something for the coming Spring....

If on a serious railfanning outing, going from past activity, (which it's been a while...), I might shoot 2-3 rolls of 36 exposure K64 in a day. So if I'm out for perhaps 5 days? Sounds like I'm getting into the 400-500 range.

Unless, with my luck, all of the batteries wimp out...

Ken, I like the 128MP size. You can get 170 shots at 1200X1600, and if you lose it, you have only lost that many pix. Batteries, on the other hand, are ridiculous with my (Gateway, no longer advertised, and I wonder why?) P&S or should I say POS camera. I get 3 to 11 shots on newly charged batteries. Useless for fanning. I use it for church activities and family stuff. [IMG]

    Ken:

With my four MP Coolpix 4300, I found a 256 card to be fine. I had four of them. With my new Nikon D-50 DSLR, 1 gig is the norm. I also have a 512 card as well.

If you take alot of photo's you need a card with much more memory than 64k.

You should try a 256 card...

I use a 1 gig Compact Flash card in my Digital Rebel XT. Shooting at the highest resolution (Other than RAW), I can get about 290 pictures on it.

I think using larger cards is better. The reason being is I tend to shoot a lot of pictures in a burst, like 3 frames per second on a moving train. I don't want to get to the last 4 locos in the lashup and run out of storage space.

It really depends on your use... If you are just shooting a few pictures here and there, then you could get by with smaller cards and changing them more often.

I carry two 1 gig cards and a couple 512 cards when I go out. On a good day of railfanning, I can easily fill a one gig card. (After downloading 300 pictures, on my first pass, I'll end up deleting at least 20% that aren't up to my standards or expectations; especially easy when shooting with a motor drive).

Also, I would stick to the better brand of card... I have never experinced a card failure or loss of photos as a result.

As far as battery life, I have shoot over 700 photos in a day with my Rebel XT and still have not run out of charge!

I would do this. Figure out what you really think you need. Figure out what brands you find acceptable and then start shopping for a card with twice that capacity. If you have a month or so to shop, you will probably find someplace with that card on sale for not much more than the half-capacity card you need.

Hmmmm. Plenty to digest. I do have time, as the hoped for trip isn't until Spring.

Doug used the word "shopping." That has me thinking- I wonder about any after Christmas type sales????? Might help stretch the budget.....

On my Nikon 70, I can shoot over 1000 pictures without a battery recharge. Doug is right if you have time wait for the after Chritmas sales.

My first 1 gig card in March of 2004 cost $512.00 Canadian, I picked up a new 1 Gig card the other day for just over $150.00. Thats quite a price drop in a year.

"IMHO" - I find that the LEXAR 512 woo woo woo Professional Compact Flash to be the fastest and best card for a weekend worth of pictures.

    Have fun above all else

Owen, for Nikon D70, Sandisk Ultra II is the fastest. It's been tested to work the best for that camera. The Lexar 80x Pro comes in close.

Does anyone have one of the new Hitachi micro drives? They are in 2,3,4 & 6 gig sizes and quite attractively priced. I was wondering if anyone had any hands on experience.

I am sure they can't be as fast as the Lexar Pro or Sandisk Ultras, but I was wondering what the speed difference is.

I have four 1-gbyte cards and and a bunch of 512s. Since I shoot raw or fine jpeg, I'm going to buy more, and faster, cards. With a Nikon D100, jpegs take about 3.5 mbytes and raw takes 9.5 mbyte. The D70 takes the same size jpegs, but raw is 4.9 mbyte. I learned in Alaska that I could never have too many cards--I was looking every other day for a place to make a CD!
