I have a spare room, which measures 10'6" by 11'6". I have a 4 foot by 10 inch N scale switching layout, which has a track at the right edge, 4.5 inches back from the front edge. Any ideas on how to integrate a wye, small yard, 6" turntable and a Walthers two stall roundhouse into a space beside the existing layout, not more than 6 feet long and 2.5 feet deep?

I'm debating whether to add a wye to it, or scrap that idea.

This is to represent a fictional town at the end of a branchline in WV.

    Jon,
It is a little difficult to determine feasability without a diagram. Do you have a drawing which you can scan or a layout plan that has been done electronically? If you do email it to me and I can post it for you.

IMO a wye is pretty hard to fit into a shelf plan. About the only place they fit is in a corner or into the middle of the room (not always a bad thing) If you are planning to add a turntable then there is no longer a need for the wye.

I'm debating whether to fit a wye or a turntable... and I've looked at the space, and the wye is pretty much out of the question. One leg of the wye, plus the wye itself will not fit on the shelf like it needs to. I've been doing some fullsize drawings and placing actual track pieces over the drawing, and I'm still stumped. Ah well... perhaps the idea will dawn on me tomorrow [IMG]

Is there a reason you are doing an around the room layout, as you would get more running and "druthers" into it. You could build in modular or sectional fashion so that if you move, saving most of it or changing some of it, won't be an issue.

I assume you meant to ask why AREN'T I building an around the room layout?

It is actually... but this switching shelf is only a very small part of it. I will post a track plan I've come up with for Prince, WV later, perhaps even tonight [IMG] I am going to build this to be standard sizes that will fit in almost any room, as I'm moving out in less than two years, and leaving the layout here for another two years, then moving it into a new location. Because of this, I'm not going to plan anything permanent. The pieces I build now will be like cornerstones to give me a head start when I have more room for further expansion. More details later [IMG] By the way, what do you mean by "druthers" ?

HA! "Druthers" is an old term I haven't heard in years! I didn't know anybody still spoke the King's english!

If you have a curve close to the edge and an end, maybe you could install a turnout in the straight track where the curve starts, and a second turnout in that curve, so the curve could be leg 1 of your "Y". The leg 2 would come off of the #2 turnout, partly on the original table, and finishing up on the new table, where it would connect to the original straight section to make leg 3 at the third turnout. It would fit like cutting the corner of an "L" shaped shelf, and utilize the track already done.

I've more or less given up on fitting a wye on that part of the layout. Designs for it thus far have ranged from 10" wide, to 18" wide.

I'm going to do some further track planning, and design a different part (Prince) later today, and I'll share that with y'all [IMG]

    Jon,
Yes I meant "aren't"...from the key board challenged person. Your idea of building in stages, taking into account moves is a wise one. You will also be able to easily modify it as you become more skilled an opinionated about what you want.

Jon, I added a triangular gusset in a corner to allow a curve on my layout. It also makes a handy photo position where I can get close ups of the rolling stock.
