Here are photos of a rail mounted hot box detector and a self restoring dragging equipment detector. The fiirst photo shows the two scanners mounted on the rail at the location of the two tie straps. The next photo shows the two transducers mounted on the inside of the rail. These control the gating to let the scanner look at the journal. The next photo shows a close up of one scanner. The next photo is the dragging detector. The last photo is another view of the dragger. These two detectors are sometime both mounted at one location or there may be only one at a location. All are now "Talkers" as they report defects to the train crew via radio.
unless it is just an optical illusion the third photo shows a broken rail or atleast a chunk of railhead broken. someone needs to do some welding.
I've got an N scale etched kit for these two that are just waiting on a layout, or a new module. The neat thing that I've got to figure out is a lighted sign I've seen pictures of in an old MoPac ETT.
It sure does look like a broken rail. I took the photos in 1994 and can't remember if it was broken or something else. It shows up much clearer onthe scanned photo than on the original.
scott they came from athabasca systems, they made the wide cn cabs for the sd40's in ethced also. i have some but still in package.
