How do you determine what decoder to use? Is there that much difference between brands?

    Richard,
I personally use NCE and Digitrax. As far as which decoder to use, you have to know what exactly you want it to do (ie strobes, sound, whatever) and read up on which decoders do that. If you go to either Digitrax's website or NCE's website, they should have complete specs on their decoders. Also check out Tony's Trians(http://www.ttx-dcc.com/about_tonys.htm). Good luck

I own Digitrax dcc and use digi decoders but also have a soft spot for Lenz decoders as well.

    Hi Richard,

it all depends upon ... :)

    1. what is the current required by your locos motor ?
    2. How many functions are required (front-lights, back-lights, steamengine, sound, ...)
    3. is Back-EMF required ?
    4. Is transponding required
    5. Is there any other feature not yet listed required ?

If you have the answers on those questions it will probably drill down the big list of possible decoders to a rather smaller one.

Than it's up to you to decode on price or manufacturer. Lenz is very tolerant in case a decoder ever fails (as they will replace it often free of charge).

Hope this helps in making up your decision.
