    I am switching to DCC and I want to install decoders into a pair of Bachmann / Spectrum GE 44 Tonners for my harbor switching layout. I have been told to get the Digitrax DZ 125 decoders. Can you recommend that choice? Is the installation something that a novice to DCC can do? What recommendations do you have for that engine? Many thanks.

    sabatrain;

    The DZ125 is an inexpensive decoder that should meet your needs. However, I looked at the page Arctic Train recommended and I'd have to say that this isn't what I'd call an easy installation for someone installing their first decoder. The best advice when installing hard-wired decoders is take your time.

    that web site shows installation for the original two motor version, the current one motor version has either an 8 pin plug or the seven soldering pads, I don't remember which at the monent, but with the shell removed, you will see the dummy plug or two bronze clips on the edge of the board.

    Now that's an easy installation.
