I'm looking for decoder options for an Atlas S4 (I assume it will be the same as the S2). This will be non-sound. I have previously used a Digitrax DZ126IN. This worked pretty well, but I'd like to see if there are better choices available. Are there other/better options?
If your S4 already has the 6 pin interface and you are just swapping out and want better motor control I'd opt for either a ZIMO MN170N or ESU 59827.
It does have the 6 pin interface. The ESU 59827 looks like a fit, but it seems to have wires soldered on. Can these be clipped off? Would doing so have any impact on the decoder? I am just looking to run basic DCC, no sound, and no functions other than the light control.
Yes, you can clip the wires off. Those wires are for using the extra function outputs of the decoder that aren't part of the 651 interface.
Thanks, this is helpful! One more question - on the ESU, which side of the decoder is the top? The side where the wires are attached, or is it the other side? If I go this route I want to make sure I have the orientation correct when I install it.
If you are looking at the decoder with the wires underneath and the pins facing away then pin 1 is the rightmost pin.
Thanks again! I am considering a zimo now also (if I can find a place that sells them here in the U.S.). Some research/browsing found some folks feeling that the motor control on the zimo was better. ESU had better sound, but since this is going to be a non-sound unit I'd just like to get the best running/motor control I can get.
This decoder is still available but there is 70mm of wire between the decoder and the 651 plug. As long as there is room between the shell and chassis when assembled this could work. If you have soldering skills you could shorten the wires or even just directly solder the plug to the board omitting the wires altogether.
NVMD on that last. Here is one (MX615N) still in stock and even smaller than the one I originally suggested.
