Does anyone around here knows how to disable the Bell when the Horn of the dash 9 is activated?

When I horn, I don't want the bell to start... ;)

I don't like the horn/bell action either. It seems to be programmed in the file d9cab.sms which is located in dash9/sounds directory.

Sounds are programmed streams in this file. It's not something to change without some technical knowledge. Must read and change the file using 'Wordpad' . I'm reluctant to try myself without further research.

A good research and FAQ site is:

Thats how it is on the ones the big boys play with. Sometimes I notice the bell doesnt work when I use the horn, but methinks its a glitch. I'd rather have the horn work when I want. I notice that even a light tap on the geep and dash 9 horns make them whistle very long...not very easy to signal backup moves, etc. I'd like to see that have a fix before the bell/horn function. Just my two cents

This is the hard way but it works.

    Start
    Explore
    Programs
    Microsoft Games
    Train Simulator
    Trains
    Trainset
    Dash9
    Sound

Highlite d9_bell1.wav and copy. DO NOT CLOSE YET!!

Move to an empty folder some place and paste. Add a letter, a, to the front of it. This is your backup. Paste another copy to folder. This is the one to play with.

    Right click d9_bell1.wav
    Click Open
    Click Effects
Click Decrease Volume. Do this until you no longer hear the bell. You hit the single right arrow to play.

Close the bell sound window. You will get a save window pop up. Click yes.

Now you have a choice. You can move both back to MSTS or move the modified one. Just save the backup some place.

    Highlite one or both.
Open up the window I told you not to close ;^). paste one or both . You will get an overwrite window. Click yes.

There is a file with the duration of the bell some where but I can not find it at this time. Also, you will never hear the horn unless you go back in and paste the stock one back in place.

Found simple fix to the bell /with horn problem.

Must change file "dash9.eng" located under the dash9 directory.

    (CHG 1 TO 0 (zero) ) ( 1 =yes, 0 = no)

    LINE TO CHANGE READS:
    DoesHornTriggerBell( 1 )

    CHANGE TO:
    DoesHornTriggerBell( 0 )

    **CAUTION (Save file prior change)_
    * MUST USE 'WORDPAD' editor located under the accessories program group.

Tested it and it works fine. There are other values that can be changed in that file if you feel brave.

... length of horn sound maybe do to the length of (.wav) file. No doubt duration recorded. Can replace with your own (.wav) file but with same MSTS file name.

That was the file I was hunting for. I must have over looked it. I knew it was some where.

I tried to change things with the wordpad and it didnt work until I changed it to open "all documents" now i changed things and it works great! I changed how much smoke comes out, and I got a better cab view out the right hand window, except theres a small hole on the short hood, but I cover that up with the switching aid...I'll try to fix it better today. Now I'm going to try to change the horn length recordings with quicktime. I'll let you guys know how it goes. How else am I going to signal backup moves if I cant do the 3 short whistles?? Later guys
