CSX Slug in Atlanta around 1992. Not sure where this picture was taken. I went jogging and found this bridge with a bunch of tracks.
Interesting consist! The 1000 series slugs were used in yards, from what I remember... looks like you also snagged a U18B! Harold
Nice shots, Richard! I don't think I have seen a yard slug in the YN3 scheme... I did catch a road slug in YN3 quite a while ago. Harold
So...although the slug is sandwiched between two units with cabs, it is actually mated with only one of those units? There were no three unit set ups? I think I have picture of a NS three unit yard slug set up.
Harold, I have yet to see a road slug in YN3. The yard slug above was the first yard slug to get the YN3 scheme. Flash, I think most all slugs are set up so that they can be run both single ended and double ended.
O.K. Richard, here you go! I believe this is one of the first, if not the first, road slug to be repainted into YN3. Harold
Harold, Thanks for the pic. That does look good. It is strange that the parent didn't get a repaint with the slug.
I caught this Momma/Slug pair today on the NO&M sub hauling a train distributing ballast for Katrina repairs. Momma was a GP40-2, #6918. Slug, #2318, may have started life as a GP35, 38, or 39, but you guys who know this stuff will have to tell me. Also, notice that the Slug's horn bells are covered over. I assume they still work because these two can be operated from the Slug position, but I thought this was odd. - I was able to get a nice close-up of the power and control cables between Momma and the Slug. This decal ("K9 APU") was attached to 6918 below the cab window on the Conductor's side. Does anybody know what it means? Does it have anything to do with 6918 being able to control a Slug?
Ecotrans / K9 has nothing to do with the slug system, as far as I know. Other units are equipped. Harold
I think the APU is an auxilary power unit that helps keep loco vital fluids warm(er) when the loco is shut down. Harold
K9 APU is apparently an emmissions control kit to comply with new regs. http://www.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/pdfs/idling_2004/stewart.pdf ACLer
