Are there any GP38's still in use on CSX? A friend passed me a link that showed Atlas is supposed to be producing N Scale GP38's and they will be in the Bright Future scheme; I was wondering if any were still on the roster???

I'm not sure of the regular GP-38's, but I do see a lot of GP 38-2's (bright future scheme)where I work.

well come to think of it there may have been very few CSX gp38's that has the Bright future scheme, but csx purged them all in the past 2 years. In fact all the B23-7's were retired before I heard they were starting to be retired (scrapped, actually) I think if you went to the CSX yards in Huntington,WV you would se a couple sidings with a while train of B23-7's probably about the same in Cumberland.

Like Dave said, quite a few GP38-2's around, here in Detroit there are a couple of 'em being used as yard engs in the CR shared assets area.

Yes, I agree about the GP38-2's: very common items. Here's a photo of a CSX GP38 in the Bright Future scheme that Atlas will paint their model in (Photo courtesy of the CSX photo archives): [IMG]

one other thing I would oike to know is that did CSX rebuild any GP38's in to dash 2's like with the SD40 and SD45s, and what ever else?? [IMG]

I don't think so.... CSX had a fleet of over 200 "real" GP38-2's, so I think they decided just to sell off the older units. Like the GP40's that CSX purged from their roster, many were in very old (and ratty) paint schemes when they left.

I was digging around "the archives" (my shoebox  ) and was surprised at how many GP38 photos I actually had. I will try to scan and post some pics this weekend. [IMG]

Hey cheesie , I piloted a CSX train from Port Huron to Flint and back and we had a 2004 in the lead I beleive , it was along time ago but I was looking in my timebook and I thought that number rang a bell .

    Nice picture also .

I had already scanned & posted a photo of an Operation Redblock CSX GP38 at some time in the past:

I modeled that GP-38 "operation Red Block" in HO. Made from an undecorated Athearn kit. Its one to get a conversation going! Alot of friends of mine think that Athearn painted it and its totally custom by me, and a great loco at that

I believe CSX had Operation Redblock units painted on GP38's, GP38-2's, GP40's, and even an SD40. Check in the old topics in this forum; we had a separate thread about these units (with pictures) a while back.
