Richard, best area in WNY is at Dunkirk, just southwest of Buffalo. The East Dunkirk Hill, local switching at the food plants, power plant etc, the steam loco/rolling stock display at the fairgrounds, the Dunkirk Historical Society's RR museum (Alco, DAV&P and other artifacts), view the old Alco plant layout (many buildings still standing), the west side (at Van Buren) where the NS and CSX tracks converge and are only about 40' apart (great photos here) along with Canadian run-thrus (lately with pure SOO power) etc etc etc. Dunkirk was the original eastern terminus of the Erie RR in 1851. A lot of info etc available at the HS, if you're interested. Also close by (about 30 miles), the North East (PA) RR historical park (Lake Shore RHS&M) with GN Empire Builder psgr car, U25B loco and so much more. Plus about 8 miles from that, the GE locomotive plant at Erie (see the "dead-line" trade-ins along Rt. 5). Also just a few miles SE of Dunkirk is the Salamance Rail Museum with a lot of BR&P info, data and artifacts, if you're interested.

There's a lot of railroading to see and do along that strip from Dunkirk, NY to North East, PA. Upwards of 40-50 trains per day, depending on the coal trains, to choose from and excellent locations (off RR property) for photos.
Check out these links for a bit more info:

    Dunkirk, NY

    North East, PA

    Good luck, and happy railfanning!
    Bill

    Guys,
Thanks for the info. I hope I am able to get some decent shot while I'm up that way.
