What coupler conversion do I need to get to convert a Life-Like SD7 logo D&RGW stock #5303 to the micro trains couplers. I have never done this before. I am really new at this conversion subject! I have a #1015/1016 kit. Is this what I need? I bought this years ago and threw it in my train box!

Thanks in advance, I am new here and really just started working on my N-scale layout again!

On my LL locomotives, I built up the pilot with styrene, and made a coupler pocket to take the 1015 couplers. I do not have a coupler height gauge, so used a M/T truck with coupler as a check for correct height. Coupler cut lever, air hoses, etc. can also be added to the new pilot.

    A Tennessee VW fan? ;)

The 1015 is the right coupler to use in these Life-Like units. Pop the coupler retaining clip, toss the Rapido couplers and then slip the 1015 in and replace the clip.
Being probably the older style of 1015 (from your description being the 1016 as well) build them right way up with the lid at the top, if I recall correctly.

If you are going to be doing coupler replacements and body mounting of MTL's, I'd invest n a coupler height gauge.

    Gary.
ps - Alan, the SD7 has a pilot already. ;)

When I visited the hobby shop the other day they mentioned that there might be a one piece coupler you just pop in. They said you just remove the Rapido and install this one. Is this correct?

Yes, the MT 1015-1 is already assembled and is easily installed by popping out the clip that holds the Rapido coupler, removing the brass spring, and then just install the new coupler with the original clip to hold it in place.

So will the MT 1015-1 fit on most of my Life-Like engines or just the #5303 I mentioned earlier?

Everyone had been so kind to anwser my rookie questions!

If your Lifelike locos have a full pilot the 1015s will fit.

The 1015 will fit the following lifelike locomotives, GP-20, SD7/SD9, SW1200, and the new FA1. The gP-18 requires either a truck mount 1129 or a pilot mount 1166 which requires cutting of the truck coupler pocket. The GP38-2, earlier FA2 and the BL2 use the 1135 truck mount.

    I hope this helps
