Attached are images taken September 1st, 2006. They are where the Milwaukee Road tracks cross County Road 601, just south of Repbulic, MI. The line is defunct in the area. Some sections north of here, near Champion, are used by the mining companies to move ore. South of this is Witch Lake and Channing. The line near Witch Lake is used as a grain car and box car storage area. Channing Yard still is operating, sort of. They have a BIG sign on the depot informing would be railfans that thier presence is not required or welcomed. There is a Russ Porter painting of the depot in Republic with the Copper Country Ltd pulling in. The depot no longer exists, nor does the track through Republic.
According to the map on their site, they own the trackage up to Republic. The track north of this point and through Republic is gone. When I was in Republic Jct. 6 years ago the tracks were in place in the yard and down the old CNW line. When I was there this past September, they had been ripped up. So, why these tracks are in place I don't know. They may have use for them. The whole line would have to be redone if that were the case. On a side note, from my second hand accounts the E&LS had some equipment ripped of by "railroad fans" which would explain their signage in Channing.

I heard it was something involving stealing things in storage so what you describe makes sense. It doesn't help that your average Yooper looks at all Trolls with disdain and distrust to begin with. When things like this happen, it only confirms their suspicions.
