I see NS is rebuilding their old SD60's into SD60E's. I am wondering if the parts are on the market to convert an old Atlas SD60 I have laying around into an SD60E. Seems like the cab is the big issue. Anyone?

The heavy brow is a shame... a nice looking cab if it were not for that.

Looks like you could start with an Atlas SD60M two window cab as a kitbash. You would need to scratch build everything from the windshield forward though.

Thats kind of what I like about it.

I decided I'm going to take this on in the next few weeks. I ordered some parts from Atlas. SD60M shell assembly plus some spare cabs and windshields. I have seen some of the HO guys using SD70M noses. Since KATO is charging $25 for those shells, I have an SD70M that may be useful in a graft. I don't necessarily want to beat up an SD70M unless I have to though, so once the parts arrive, I am going to play around with the parts and see what I come up with.

Here's a video an HO guy made of his kitbash.

A SD60E in N Scale will be an interesting build, I hope it goes well and I may have to copy your build sometime since I think the SD60E's are very cool engines!

So it looks like they added an overhang to the forehead, squared-off the windows, and flattened the nose... And the grills on the cab side are slightly different. Are there any changes to the long hood?

As far as I can tell the long hood is the same, but I'm going to do a little more research on it

the the dynamic brake grilles extend out and the intercooler fan on top is from a F/E units.

    According to Altoona Works

"240 units planned total through 2019

    Work Done:
    - Engine upgraded to 710G3B-EC w/ EFI and Tier 2 emmisions with split cooling
    - EM2000 microprocessor installed, including all new electrical cabinet
    - New widecab installed with a/c, cab signals & LSL, original long hood retained
    - New crashworthy fuel tank installed
    - Changed from long hood forward to short hood forward where applicable
    - KNORR (CCB2) electronic air brake and motor-driven air compressor installed
    - "Layover equipment" and NS-designed (at Juniata) split cooling installed with added intercooler fan
    - 6934 and up equipped with EMDEC Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) system, others equipped with Quantum or Interstate
    - Initially the first few SD60Es were rated at 3800 hp, but they and the rest have been upped to 4000 hp

    Notes:
    - NS 6593 was to become NS 6902, but the frame was found to be too damaged from the Graniteville wreck
    - Cab design by Norfolk Southern and built by Curry Supply of Curryville, PA
    - Design weight: 412,000 lbs
    - 100,000 lbs tractive effort
    - Sometime between 5/10 and 10/10, NS 6613 was modified with the addition of an intercooler fan behind
the dynamic brake like the SD60E
    - Classified by NS as power group 5, 8 axles of power, 8 axles of extended range/high capacity dynamics
    - A frame check of NS 6905 revealed that 6905/6906 were mixed up at some point, so we swapped their former numbers"

So it looks like the long hood went unchanged except for the extended DB grille as NS737 mentioned. It does mention one unit getting an intercooler fan but I'm trying to figure out where that was placed, if it was visible on the long hood... my untrained eye can't find this "f/e unit fan"
Heres an SD60 before the conversion

I also found a shot of what an HO guy had to do to modify a cab, as mentioned earlier, add the brow and custom build the nose, then lots of filler

Yeah I see it now. I found a model power F unit shell I am going to scoop up for the fan grille. Will keep you all posted as I get started!

also look at your first pic. no. 6900 has the other intercooler fan on top of the dynamic brake. so more then one got this intercooler fan.

I recently received some parts from Atlas, so I wrapped up some other things I had been working on, and started this kitbash. I will be modeling NS 6912
    [IMG]

The first thing I did was google'd all the info I could find on the SD60E. Having never seen an SD60E in real life (there is only about 30+ on the lines right now...), pictures are my biggest research tool. From what I can tell this is the list of changes that need to be made to the cab. I will be using an SD60M cab.

    -Nose flattened about 2mm back
    -Cab door added to nose
-Windshield frame corners raised and flattened
-Sides of nose raised and flattened
-Brow added (largest process as the numberboard cut-outs and headlight need to be installed at new SD60E angle)

The long hood also needs the following changes made
-F unit Intercooler fan added to dyanimic blister on roof
-Dyanmic Grilles extended from side of Long Hood
-Brake wheel installed to rear of Long Hood

I decided to start with the Cab tonight. I started from the bottom and will be making my way up. I chose to do this for two reasons: 1: The windshield will be easier to modify before the brow is installed and 2: I am waiting on Atlas for two more SD60M cabs to use as donors for the numberboards and headlights.

Ok so I started by lopping off the nose, and filing everything down
    [IMG]

Next, I installed a .40 styrene blank to the nose (I will be using filler to fill the small gaps in the corners)

I then reinforced the graft with some .40 styrene strip
    [IMG]

Next I lopped off the numberboard area, and began to modify the windshield frame (saving the vertical support) and cut the roof back about 2mm so I could have a straight seam to work with. I then used .20 styrene to build the lower part of the brow
    [IMG]
*Note- if you are attempting this it may be worth trying to salvage the numberboard area. I decided it would be easier to use another cab and cut the roof and lower winshield frame, and slowly cut and file until only the numberboard and headlight area remained...

I then filed down the windshield frames flush with the existing area. Next, I added some more styrene to create vertical supports for the upper portion of the brow. Finally I used three window SD60M cab to donate the Cab Door. I filed the door as far as I could to bring down the protrusion a bit. I made sure to leave the hinges intact.

I'd just like to clarify that the new fan is NOT above the dynamics it is above the air intake. The dynamics already have a fan above them and putting the intercooler there would be silly since dynamics are hot.

Also, that looks like a tall fan off an F2 or F3. Not a tapered F7 fan.

Though 6900 has a tapered one.
