I am pretty fascinated at the g scale stuff I have seen. I am interested in maybe an outdoor setup and have lots of questions.. So, with all you folks here and your experience, what are your suggestions? Space is not an issue. Costs could be. Whats a good way to get started economically? I suppose there is a good place to look for suggestions. But i want some of all ya alls experiences first. Sent from my Commando
Think hard. Have a plan before you buy anything. Modern diseasemals? Turn of the century steam? Makes a big difference....you won't have to part with a lot of stuff at a loss. Scale. Decide on what scale makes sense to you. Can you live with 1:29? If so, do it. If not, 20.3. 24 is 3'6", so there's that option. 32 is full SG. Profile: Calculate on your scale what .332 rail works out to, then decide if your chosen railroad and equipment would have ever used rail that big. 250 or 215 may be a better choice. Local climate and track maintenance. If you buy less expensive aluminium track, and do radio battery, what is the cost savings as opposed to a 12 amp control station, handhelds, boosters, decoders, wiring, wiring and more wiring. And a whacking big power supply. Last time I checked, doing radio battery as opposed to all the power you'll need worked out to about 5 radio/battery/sound loco conversions. Factor in stainless track (which with the Aristo folding is going to be interesting), which is very expensive, relative to aluminum, and the number of locos jumps, depending on lineal feet. Raise the railroad. You may be young now, but not forever...having it 36-42" up really helps. If mine wasn't up, it would have been torn out the first year...but it's been over 20 and still going. Run a line to a lockable shed, shop or garage so you don't have to carry everything in and out. Dave
Also, what is the ballpark price for wireless for five locos? I figure batteries, charger, tranceivers and controller.
