Based on length alone, are the Con-Cor passenger cars prototypical in N scale? I realize that paint schemes, windows, etc. may not be 100% correct, I just want to make sure they aren't the length of my 40' box cars.
AFAIK, Con-Cor smoothside cars were patterned off of the GN Empire Builder, in many respects. There are a few exceptions one being one car's window arrangement is inside out/backwards for the prototype! But, if you want a semi-correct EB, C-C is a good start. They just need a better paint job. I dunno how correct the Kato smoothsides are, but in my opinion, they are superior to CC. That's why I painted my GN 1391, Great Dome lounge Brass Car Sides/Bachmann conversion to match my Kato s-s's. Next project, is to do another Great Dome only in Big Sky Blue....
Pass. train modeling Barry, this is where I got the info above. Njoy! Granted, you may not be modeling the EB, the CZ or any other train represented here, but this will give you an idea of what cars are correct for what prototype. [ 21. May 2003, 17:09: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
But are they the correct length? A while ago I bought a NP passenger set (unknown manufacturer) on eBay, and the passenger cars were about 50' scale feet long. I want to make sure Con-Cor cars are 85'?
No problem! I just realized my superior Kato train is not so superior in correctness anymore... As for length, use a scale ruler! I got mine (plastic) for 3 bucks at the LHS.

(edit) BTW, by your avatar, I gather you model GN/NP varnish. Is this correct? I also have a 12-car NP NCL concor set to sell. Interested?
Barry, The ConCor passenger cars I have are somewhere close to the 85 scale foot mark. If you want, email me off line and I'll set one up next to an autorack and send you pic so you can see the size better.
I have seen the ConCor NCL set and it is a beauty! I only wish I had more disposable income at the moment to get it. There was an article a couple years ago in N Scale Railroading on a guy, Steve Cleere, who hac a prototypical North Coast Limited train, and most of his cars were the ConCor. That suprised me because I thought the Kato cars would be the more prototypical model. The short passenger cars that were out measured a scale 65 feet I believe, and were known as the "Arnold Shorty's" if I remember correctly. While not prototypical by any means, they came from an era where people wanted to run on 9 3/4" radius spagetti bowl layouts, and they looked good in that situation.
This sounds like it might be the old Arnold Rapido set? If so, at one time, it was highly collectible. Boxcab E50
Jan/Feb 01. It's my most favorite issue of NSR! The train was built by a pass. train guru, Mark Jirousek. I have talked to him, and he's very friendly, and helped me a bunch while I built my GN 1391 Great Dome. As seen below: [ 25. May 2003, 01:19: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
Cool! Now have that one right here on my desk. Some of the classiest colors in railroading were those found between the Great Lakes, and the Pacific North West. Boxcab E50 (NSR Subscriber Number 14!!!!!)
Thanks, but it was a hasty pic taken shortly after construction was finished. The best onesw ill come when the layout has some scenery on it!
