I was re-organizing my magazines so that I could more easily access them for reference to layout design suggestions I will be making here in the design forum, when I came across one of my favourite issues, this from the Great Model Railroads 1997. In it is Paul Dokos inspiration N scale layout based on Westcott's "If I had a million" (what would I build) concept. Its just so well done!

Then on too another of my favourites, Eric Brooman's The Ever Changing Utah Belt, the best contemporary modeling has to offer, with an awesome track plan. Then...what has to be my favourite Z scale layout by Dave Miller - "Cascade crossing in Z scale." A very well done z'der (Rob how do you pronounce the last letter of the alphabet down under - Zed?)

Well I won't go on but there are other great layouts in this issue. But what caught my eye was the Timber City & Northwestern RR by the late Ben King. Now Ben has been an acknowledged photographer for years in the railroading scene. However, what really struck me is that his photographs aren't as good as Paul Templar's. Nor is his layout for that matter. I realized how special it is to have Paul here.. Kudos Paul!

Australians pronounce it 'zed' - I try to remember to pronounce it 'zed' when I am speaking to Australians or other Commonwealth Nations - and 'zee' when speaking to Americans. I say try because the reality is I will most likely interchange the pronunciations randomly in the same sentence (I am doing this with more and more words the longer I am here - but I still can't fake an Australian accent without sounding like an American faking an Australian accent.) Up der in Canada you guz say 'zed' eh?

1997 GMR - I missed that one - I'll have to go on a hunt for it... (for the sake of on-topic)

And Paul - if you have read this far... there was a comment you made in another thread somewhere about MR saying they wanted "first crack" at your next layout - I think you should take them up on it [IMG] I like Model Railroading Magazine very much - but Model Railroader has a bigger circulation - many more people will see your great model railroad there.

Up here in Canada we do say zed eh! don't forget the eh!. Unlike our neighbours we still have to spell colour instead of color but other than having a fierce patriotic pride, we are very much like our neighbours and there is a gradual assimilation especially to the northern states. We do say trucks not lorrys, we say elevator not lift and when it comes to cars, we don't call a hood a bonnet or a trunk a boot.
I would very much like to see a meshing of the dollar so we don't have to deal with the crazy money investors who keep the Canadian dollar so low that we can't afford goods produced in the USA

    Hi Rick,
I thank you for the complement, I have tried over my 65 years of living to do my best and to help other people in what ever I have been doing. I am still learning myself with Model Railroads, and still strive for the ultimate perfection which alas, has still to be achieved. So, on I go.

    Rob,
I might just let Model Railroader have "First Crack" at my new Badger Creek, as Model Railroading has published 11 other articles of mine. So I might, when it is finished, get in touch with Jim Kelly, seeing as it is already on there website- www.trains.com - might be interesting.

    cheers all
    Paul

I second Rob's suggestion of MR running an article on your layout. There is no other magazine over here that comes close to the popularity of MR. Even the people who say the don't buy it, stand in stores reading it....lol.

    Hi all,
Back in 1994 whilst a member of N.M.R.A., I entered the Amateur Video competition with my then “Raton Snake Valley” HO railroad. I spent over 20 hours making the 7 minuet video complete with authentic sounds. To cut the story short, it won first place, and the video was taken up by the N.M.R.A. and made into a promotional video, along with many other HO and N-scale layouts. This video is still for hire (I think) at the A.C. Kalmbach Memorial Library. Also it was for sale from Steam Powered Videos here in the UK.

I shall be making a further video on Badger Creek Lumber Company in the near future. This will I expect be around 10 minuets with authentic sounds added. When it is finished, I will let you know, and if anyone would like a copy all I ask is you send me a blank video and postage for the return journey and it’s yours. I do know there are differences between UK and American video’s, so you may have to get it changed once you receive it. However, the offer is there.
    Cheers

Why don't you try and contact the video producers here. For you (expense) they might not come over, but if they can hit a couple of layouts in one video then they might deem it worth while (expense - plus they get to write off a trip to Europe on income taxes).

It is a nice way to memorialize what you have and open it up to more fans. I am thinking of producers like Keller productions. I think it would be worth you putting something together and submitting it to them.

    Their site is www.allenkeller.com

    Hi Rick,
I contacted Allen a few months ago regarding my Badger Creek, and was told he couldn't travel to the UK. This is one of the reasons I am going to do my own, just for pleasure.

    Thanks

    Paul
