It does have a yellow sill stripe (instead of white). It sure is a beautiful, clear shot!
Thanks Flash! At least it the UP stopped with just the yellow. strip. Here shortly I will post another un-patched unit that we caught this weekend. Ben
After the meet we headed down to the crossing. The coal train in the siding appeared to be parked and just left sitting at idle. While taking a photo of it I caught the signal flashing amber. I guess I just might get a second meet here shortly!! And sure enough here comes another train! Ben
The last of the U.P. photos for the day were at Palisade, CO where a coal train pulled into the siding to let Amtrak pass. It was sad to see that the old D&RGW signals have been removed and replaced with the new U.P. signals. Ben
Great catch on the unmolested Espee units! Love the Yarmony shots, too. The curves there are fintastic.
I am glad that you like it! Hopefully I will get out again soon to add a few more photos. Maybe in the meantime one of our other members will catch some Colorado U.P. photos to share? Either way I am sure we will have some new stuff to view in the not to distant future. Ben
A much needed fence and slope stabilization is coming soon. http://www.kjct8.com/news/30602918/detail.html Ben
We didn't catch much for trains this weekend. Here are a couple of shots of the the one train that we did see. UP 6897 passes the Grand Junction DOE facility pulling some empty coal hoppers along the Montrose Branch. Ben
99% of the traffic from the south of Grand Junction is coal. But that all comes from east of Delta, along the Northfork branch. On Fridays, the Montrose local drops off covered hoppers in Delta, mag cloride tankers in Olathe, boxcars and centerbeams of lumber at two places near Montrose, and finally near the depot in Montrose, wood chip cars and gons for scrap steel. On Sundays, the return trip is made, picking up any loads of woodchips and scrap steel that were completed on Saturday, empty boxcars/centerbeams, along the way, and the covered hoppers in Delta. Several times a year, the grain elevator in Olathe will also load covered hoppers, and there are a couple of other industries that I can't seem to remember at this time.
Last week I got the opportunity to train with the Landmark local. I've been with them for the last 3 days, and it's been great. The conductor and engineer have nearly 60 years of experience between the two of them, so I've been learning a lot in just the last 3 days. The Landmark local primarily switches industries along the main west of Grand Junction out to "Landmark", a series of indutries just to the west of Fruita four days a week, MTWT. The fun trip is on Sundays, when we go to Moab! Well, actually Potash, where we drop off empty covered hoppers and and pick up loads, if there are any. Just to keep this post on topic, here's a pic of our train between Moab and Potash. EDIT -- Almost forgot, the tank behind the second unit is a mag chloride tanker from Brendel (Cresent Junction).
Sounds like you are having a blast! I have been wanting to railfan near Potash sometime. The backgrounds in the Moab would make for some excellent photos. Ben
