Today I caught UP 3981 taking the siding in Palisade, CO for a meet. After turning around to get on the other side of the train I took a few pictures of some gons. It looks like the first one is about ready for retirement. ] Ben
I have not caught a lot of local action lately. Here is a former S.P and a former Cotton Belt switching in the Grand Junction yard. It looks like U.P. needs to mow a few weeds! Ben
Switching The only Colorado railfan shot I captured this weekend was of U.P. using this HLCX unit to switch cars. Ben
What's the story on the HLCX 3856 loco? Check out the smaller fuel tank. I would be curious about it's original owner.
HCLX 3856 corresponds to GP38-2 frame serial number 73611-1 ordered by DT&I, the Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad, numbered as 414, according to RRPictureArchives.net. Not sure what the story is on the short tanks, but sometimes that's a cost-saving measure, I think.
Thanks Dave! It looks like Steve was able to find the heritage of the engine. Unfortunately I do not know why the tanks are so small. Ben
Mike (pastoolio) went out railfanning with me today. The day started out great with some switching action being performed by HCLX 3856. Plenty more pictures to follow from our day out....
Ahhh you lucky buggers.......man what a wet dream to be able to rail fan for a day in the US.One day...... Waiting patiently for more pic's Keep up the great work you guys, this would one of my top three threads.
Jump on over across the pond Jason. I'm sure that we could arrange some railfanning across the U.S. for you. I'll try to post a few more pictures tonight and maybe Mike will get a wireless signal so he can post some too. Thanks for the compliment! Thanks Hemi! Ben
After lurking around the station we headed to the industrial area south of town. Mike and I caught HLCX 3856 switching out some centerbeams. Our next stop will be Bridgeport off of Highway 50. Ben
We only caught one empty coal train at Bridgeport. Had it not been for the friendly wave this last photo would not have made the cut. Ben
Man Ben, your camera skills kick butt over my camera skills! You get 4 awesome shots off and still have time to wave! I only got one good shot of it coming our way. but a few heading away I don't see any Rio Grande hoppers where I live, so these deserve a picture Mike
After that mty had went by, we walked a bit further down the tracks, and came across this "weedwacker" car. Mike
It's all in the zoom Mike. Zoom, snap, snap, wave, zoom out, snap. I dig how you captured more of the mountainous terrain in your shots. Great job!! Ben
Well I uploaded the rest of my pictures tonight so here goes. Here is my shot of the weed-waker / M.O.W.er. After driving through Palisade we headed into DeBeque Canyon where we caught the Parachute local switching some cars out at the new Haliburton facility. Seeing that they were finishing up we proceeded east on I-70 to setup for a shot or two near Beavertail Tunnel. I only captured a few good shots so I hope that Mike has some to add. Ben
Getting back onto I-70 we managed to get ahead of the local again and setup for a bridge shot on old Highway 6 just east of DeBeque, CO. And a shot similar to Mike's but from a different angle. Ben
