When did the CB&Q use this color scheme? http://www.modeljunction.info/estore/images/09200000041406.gif
IIRC, The Q used that scheme as the first dieselization scheme for hood units. Cab units used a gray or silver scheme.
I think this is an answer to my question: http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/4/8/4/4484.1094453340.jpg This was in 1963. I want this model because I love that scheme, but I have to use it on a 1965-1969 layout.
It would have been seen around the 1960's still. It is a great scheme and I lie it better than that red one.
I believe they switched to red in 1958. However, black units could still be found up to (and after) the BN merger.
Triplex is correct, the Q went to the Chinese Red and Gray in 1958 starting with all new units that were ordered, GP20's and GP30's to name a few. But the old Blackbirds survived into the BN era for a while. It took BN 10 years to re-paint everything into Cascade Green. Certainly a much better re-paint status than today's current BNSF record. Then again, paint is more of a rust inhibitor than a PR thing anymore.

Of particular interest are the color photographs of the CB&Q. http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2010/07/26/captured-america-in-color-fr om-1939-1943 Not only train stuff, but period clothing, buildings, autos, you name it. Enjoy! (p.s. grampa worked in the Clinton Roundhouse and retired after 45 years in 1965).
