Thought I would share some cold horses. This was taken in Bluefield, W.V. in 1997

With this year's weather, that could have been taken today. Are those water drops on a car window--those white spots? I think they add to the bleak atmosphere. Nice shot.

Thanks for the compliment, those are large snowflakes. I was leaving Bluefield in my big truck when i saw the locos. Took pic out of driver side window and put it back up very quickly.

Isn't that a C39-8? Those units have always looked so weird to me. Like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Good catch,,, [IMG] The C39's are getting rarer and are likely candidates for retirement....

Any particular reason it was so far out west? Maybe the retirement thing?

I dunno.... I have seen plenty of BNSF units on NS lately, so maybe they are just running off pool miles....

You're prolly correct. The class 1's seem to do that a bunch.

    Hi Mike
    Welcome aboard TrainBoard!

As far as any pending BNSF / NS merger, I have no inside knowledge about that..... If the sight of foreign power is supposed to be an indication of a pending merger, then it would appear CSX and UP are going to hook up [IMG]

I am positive that there will be no more Class 1 railroad mergers. You see all that are left are UP, CSX, BNSF, NS, CP and maybe one other. Just 15 years ago there was over 10

In 1975, there were 74 Class I RR's left in the US!

That's not quite 30 years ago. [IMG]

The NS is leasing whatever power they can get ahold of right now.Until the 100 new dash9's get here. You will see mixed power on trains for a number of reasons.Paying back horse power from one railroad to another. And some BNSF trains must run across NS tracks to get from A to B.All the Class 1 Railroads do this between each other.Where I work out of we have UP trains BNSF trains and CN/IC trains that we get out of the North and hand them back off to the respctfull railroads at other points.
Seeing foriegn power on trains is by no means a sign of a pending merger.Sometimes you can get some really neat lash up's.It just makes modeling trains that much more fun.
