    Hey All;
    Just got done with the first class/clinic at the club I'm at. A few months back the leadership brought up the idea of having 'classes' each 3rd Thursday of the month. During which a club member would instruct on how they do something in modelrailroading. Each clinic is readied a month ahead; so the instructor has time to gather materials, hand-outs, etc. (AT LEAST SO FAR :D ) Soooo... My questions are--- Any of your clubs do this? If so what things has your club covered? Any suggestions? I would like INPUT! (hee... Short Curcuit humor there)
    Now the track is yours...

    I was not a member, but a friend invited me to a clinic at his club. That was in the early 1980's. It was an evening spent discussing remotoring locos. Especially steam.

    Back then, ConCor N scale steam :( had a tendency to easily fry motors. A bunch of stuff that had been sitting in the useless box, was quickly returned to service! :D :D So attending just the one meeting was an evening that paid off very nicely!

    So...Does this mean you have one month to gather the necesssary material to do this?

    Good luck. As much as I would love to join a model railroad club, and there is a real good one that is close here in Tucson to me, I have used their meet times to Play in a band...and You all know how much I love getting out and seeing people every now and then. So Igo to the club ever one in a while to see what's going on.

    Thanks, for the encourage Boxcar.

    Benny,
    In a way I do. Actually I'm just the cooridinator, But I have only the month to get the "teacher;" and make sure they have a stuctured lesson, supplies they/ students will need, if the teach does know the subject, etc. Kinda like a principal with a school full of substitutes. ;)
    But I have gotten several members approach me already, so I got April, May, and October (winter member) set. :D :D

    The club I used to be a member of would have regular clinics.

    some of the clinics were on the following

    1. Weathering rollingstock
    2. Painting locomotives
    3. Kit building
    4. track laying
    5. Scenery

    Basicall all factes of the hobby can be used for clinics. Good luck and let us know on the progress :D

    When is your meeting in May? I'll be in Pt Charlotte for a few days after Mum's day this year (I don't know the exact dates - my Dad has planned a side trip to The Keys)

    Anyway - we have rather informal 'mini-clinics' and 'show and tell' at our NMRA regional meets. Usually these are setup to take 15 - 20 minutes - we have done basic things like how to solder and how to lay flex track and more advanced stuff like making your own switch machines.

    Our annual convention gets more full-fledged clinics on everything from mold making to choosing a DCC system, car card operations etc. This year at our convention we are building two modules in two separate clinic 'streams' - one at a basic level and one at an advanced level. It sounds like quite a logistics exercise and I must say I'm glad I'm not organizing it :)

    Yank;
    It's May 16th at 7:45ish. The club is actually up in Largo. :( 'Bout 1.5 hours up. Soooo... Perhaps we can meet up earlier in the week an' decide what to do. Maybe pop down to Punta Gorda to the Celtic Ray Pub and knock the froth off a couple. :D

    At our Central Indiana Division MWR/NMRA meets we usually have two or three clinics at each meet/show. We have 4 of these meets/shows each year. We usually never have trouble getting clinicians but a few do get recycled every year. Since our meets cover Central Indiana thye can be seen by a different group every time. We started a new clinic for kids this year. The kids get to make a rail car (box, flat, gon or whatever else we have in stock at the time) with the help of one of us experienced kit builders. There is no charge for this car just thier name and age so we can publich the names in the Rusty Spike (our divisional newsletter). It has been a success and we are promoting our hobby and hopefully recruiting new model railroaders. We have had a lot of great comments from parents about this program and interest is growing at each meet.

    We have a small club, but we do try to have a clinic after each month's board meeting.

    Past topics have gone through everything needed to build a module (design, carpentry, tracklaying, wiring...), maintaining locos (steam and diesel), weathering, tree making, DCC installation. The list goes on a while longer, but that's what comes to mind.

    These have been great for everybody, as the subject matter experts spread the wealth.
